What is wrong with Europeans? Standards to high to come by?
 
Just remember to stop all European imports as well. I mean their standards an all. We should not bring them into this country.

Close the plants, shops and all European thoughts. Stop it now.

Oh and sommer close all universities. European things those.

See, all your problems solved. No unis no kicking lecturers.

I remember way back in '96, my first time in res. We would hang around in all the usual places as we all tried to find our places in the mini society of res.

I remember our small group of guys being greeted by some guy who seemed pleasant enough. He stood around us for a while joining the usual banter and laughing away. I quickly learned he was a senior of sorts, that he worked part time for the SRC as well as res administration. He spoke with what can be described as a black guy who went to a model C school.

A few weeks later, a meeting was organised for one of the far left leaning students organizations.
I was bored and decided 'what the h*ck, let me go and listening in. As I entered the venue I noticed the lecture hall was well attended with guys donning the usual regalia... berets, red t-shirts etc. And there was singing and chanting, eventually we all sat down to be addressed by the convener and leader.

That's when it happened, someone started speaking but I notice the voice was hoarse. The closest resemblance was that of the rapper DMX, but that was not the striking part. His accent ! Imagine a cross between Julias Malema and the former minister Steve Tshwete. A very hard accent reminiscent of someone who is intentionally resisting any hints of western pronunciation.
Then I realised it was the same guy that stopped to have a chat with us ! I remember he sounded no where near what I was hearing. It felt like theater ! Why did he have to do that ?

I realized then that the world is stage and me sitting there I just felt like a stage prop.
I felt why did he have to do that ? I made a decision then never to participate in campus politics.

The article titled ‘Students attack pregnant UKZN lecturer’ published on the front page of the Independent on Saturday dated 22 February refers. The economics lecturer mentioned in the article has expressed shock and dismay at the grave inaccuracies in the report. According to the academic concerned on Friday, 21 February protesting students disrupted her economics lecture at the Westville campus. She was sprayed with a fire-hose. She grabbed the hose and sprayed the protestors to disperse the protesting students. Whilst leaving the class she slipped on wet tiles in the T- block building. The lecturer was not trampled and she is not pregnant.

The following is an excerpt from correspondence received from the lecturer: “The lecture venues have security camera’s installed, and should there be any question about the events which took place, this footage, as opposed to cell-phone recordings of events, should be examined. I am extremely disappointed that the editor of the Independent on Saturday authorised an article to be published on this incident without a thorough investigation. To the best of my knowledge, I am not pregnant, and reporting that I am has sensationalised this incident unnecessarily amongst the public. I would like the Independent on Saturday’s editor to issue a formal retraction of the article and an apology to both the University and myself”.

It should be noted that a relatively small percentage of the student body (UKZN has over 39 000 students) engaged in protest action at the Westville campus on Friday, disrupting lectures and vandalizing University property. The protest was in breach of the final High Court interdict prohibiting any form of illegal gatherings, protests, acts of violence and intimidation. A strong police and security presence on campus was necessary to control the violent protestors and to protect the safety of our staff and students.

He was right about the pregnant story not making sense..

But it doesn't change the fact that a lecturer was effectively "attacked" by the rioting students.

Yeah ... "attacked" and "retaliated" makes a huge joke of the paper and the journalist, is fact finding too much work these days?

Nah its not...

Journalism is generally very poor in this country these days.
