Students skin 12-week-old kitten

Johannesburg - Two students at Monash SA campus in Roodepoort allegedly mutilated a kitten while it was still alive, The Citizen reported on Saturday.

Roodepoort Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) manager and senior inspector Mandy Cattanach said the kitten, about 12 weeks old, had parts of its body skinned while it was fully conscious, according to the report.

The kitten was taken to a veterinarian where it had to be put down.

"The SPCA Roodepoort had been advised and is taking this issue of horrific mutilation of a defenceless creature with the utmost seriousness," Cattanach was quoted as saying.

"Qualified inspectors are investigating and have visited the university where material is being distributed calling for information."

David Noach, Monash SA marketing relations consultant, said the case had been handed over to the police and the SPCA.

"The situation was brought to our attention and the whole of the administration staff is distraught about it and disgusted by it," he was quoted as saying.

"This should not in any way be a reflection of our institution. Monash South Africa does not condone such behaviour."

Noach said steps had been taken to inform all staff and students about the incident and get information.

I doubt if that would make a difference. Cruelty is not a trait that can be easily unlearned. Anyone who can skin a live animal has serious mental issues. The next upgrade will be skinning of human beings. If only they start with the real scum of the earth but chances are that they don't care and would randomly select from any population.

It takes a certain mind set to be able to do something like this. These people deviate significantly from the norm.
