Studies Advice

1. I think its great that you want to make a change. Life's to short to hate your job.
2. Make a list of things you like to do and what you are good at (anything from reading books, to helping people, to solving puzzles). Now look at your list, think outside of the box and ask yourself how you can make a living from one or all of those things on your list. The key to job satisfaction is to do something you're good at, that you love, and that you have talent for.
3. Spend some time evaluating your potential career choices. Talk to someone in the business, a friend or family member.

I too am worried that you apparently haven't had interest in programming before. Most guys (esp. whose who get the interesting jobs) have "the knack" and have been cracking away on computers since primary school. You will be competing with them (and the younger generation) for jobs (both interesting and boring, i.e. database management, IT support, etc). It may be that you have an excuse (lack of exposure/finances/opportunities) and that you genuinely have some underdeveloped talent for programming. If so, only you can judge it and its up to you to do the hard work and prove yourself. (The low risk online & free code.org would indeed be a great place to start).

That said, don't let my negative comments discourage you from finding something worthwhile to do on earth. And if you believe it to be software development, then go at it full throttle.

Before you spend money on a programming course, try it out. Find a tutorial on how to write a basic program, say in C#. Start with that.
