Many American women may fantasize about foreign men, but the truth is, American men aren’t that bad – especially when compared to Australian men, according to a British study.

Dr. Almudena Sevilla-Sanz from Oxford University in London found that Australian men make the worst husbands and hate helping out around the house. U.S. and British men, on the other hand, don’t mind lending a hand when it comes to housework, the Australian Associated Press reported.

Sevilla-Sanz studied more than 13,000 men and women from 12 developed countries. American men were considered the best husbands, along with men from other “egalitarian” countries such as Norway, Sweden, England and Northern Ireland.

Australian men finished last.

"In egalitarian countries you might, in principle, expect to see women preferring to remain single rather than face the prospect of spending more time doing household chores," Sevilla-Sanz said. "However, this study shows that in egalitarian countries there is less social stigma attached to men doing what was traditionally women's work. For instance, if paternity leave is the social norm, more men take it.”

Sevilla-Sanz’s study, which is titled “Household Division of Labor and Cross-Country Differences in Household Formation Rates,” will be published in the Journal of Population Economics.

How does not helping around the house make you a crap husband? I thought that beating your wife and kids, being a constant drunkard and cheating would make you a bad husband?!

No, that makes you a terrible husband ^_~

You kid me :)

Seriously, what about traditional farmers for instance... Husband is out working the fields all day long, his wife tends to the house, after working for 12 hours he gets back home, eats, makes passionate love to her then sleeps. Now he is a bad husband?

I am obviously referring to city dwellers.

Have you noticed that with studies, a new one always comes out saying the old is incorrect and null? :/

Coffe is bad ... a new study says it's good ... an even newer study says in moderation it's good ... but a newer one tells you it contains something that causes cancer

Same with chocolate, sex and just about everything else they study

Truth is relative.

I love washing the dishes. As a matter of fact, I on my way to wash a huge pile that has accumulated these last five days.

What a joyous feeling.

The average American man is about 1.75m tall and weighs around 90kgs. He is at least a year's salary indebted. He's probably balding nicely and allergic to peanuts.

Desirable traits all!

Not to mention he's...American. <shudder>

I read on Japan Probe a while back that Japanese husbands do the least amount of housework, compared to others internationally. Do not Want! And no wonder even the geekiest white guy who visits there becomes a chick magnet aka Charisma Man.

Although something of a loser in his home country (which in later strips is revealed to be Canada - the home of Charisma Man's creator), when around Japanese people the central character transforms from a skinny nerd into a muscle-bound hunk, attractive to Japanese women and admired by Japanese men.
:p

I don't know about Americans as husbands but of the 2 Yanks I've dated one is a complete douchebag, living out a Charisma Man style life in SA & the other is a prince of a man, who I'd still be with if not for distance. Individuals differ...so maybe American women are just better at choosing the nice ones than the Oz women?
