Study finds vertically-mounted solar panels might be better

For a majority of buildings, the day the builders and architects make vertical roofs is the day this will work with wide adoption.

Then we mount the panels on the north facing side of the pyramid?

  • The vertical panels are bifacial, its got nothing to do with normal panels
  • To even get any tiny possible advantage, you would have to live within the tropics of cancer and capricorn, which is the limits of the sun's path. Most of SA falls outside.
Meaningless study for SA.

Guys that do this, if they live in a suitable area ,do it for better farm space use and snow...not for for extra generation.
 
Anyone know how much these bifacial panels cost? The average domestic buyer will be more interested in the power generated per Rand than per m^2.

If you actually have solar you will know that it all depends on the orientation relative to the sun during the day.

A vertical panel will never in a million years have the same output as a horizon panel
Key is bifacial panels which cost more. Single sided panel won't get sun for half the day. Best is still a tracking system.

It's also very handy in regions with regular snowfall, since you don't need to clean the panels and the snow on the ground reflects a lot of light.
 
So the DA will no longer be able to see your solar panels from the the air in Cape Town??

Interesting comment. Wonder what they will do about ground mounted panels that's technically not an installation. Make your inverter a modular plugin system and they can fly a kite.

That is what I did for a customer in Pinelands. He had a thatch roof which was quite unsuitable for mounting panels. We mounted 8 vertically on the rear wall of a double garage. The top of the panels was 2.5m off the floor.

It gives consistent readings of 2920 watts/hour during the day and even in direct sun, the panels do not exceed 33 deg

Not true, did you read the article? The sun angle is one thing, panel heating is another

In a house in Montagu, the panels have been mounted at 47 deg. When the air temperature exceeds 35 deg, which occurs often from October to March, the output decreases by 25%
