Is this something that is done differently by each company? Or is there something in the labour law about this?
( this is not something that will end up benefitting the company )
Can they refuse it?

yeah they can certainly refuse especially if your studies aren't benefiting the actual work you perform at the company.

Just remember that the legislation refers only to statutory leave.

Many Companies give leave over and above the minimum. On this leave they can impose their conditions.

Interesting! I have heard of quite a few companies that do JUST that....

ours does that...

So that is the minimum that everybody have, but they can take away the part they give you over and above that. Interesting. But how does it work when they decide which is wich. If I take just enough to cover the extra part, can they take the other?

With us if it is a "sanctioned" course of study, you get 1 day "study" leave for every day's leave you take. One per exam, methinks. (It's been along time since I used it!!)

Leave taken each leave year up to the statutory limit is the statutory leave. Any leave above that would be the "Company" leave.

You can't decide to use Company leave and save statutory leave.

Companies can "Pay Out" for Company leave, but unless you are resigning that would be illegal to do for statutory leave.
