Study shows big shift in emigrating South Africans after lockdown

Hmm, I doubt this, I know a number of people who have left recently (ie after first lockdown).

Of course, it is more difficult to get overseas jobs at the moment, but this should be a temporary factor.

"The study included almost 209,000 participants in 190 countries and 1,421 in South Africa, focusing on worker mobility and preferences."

I hardly think 1421 people is enough to draw this conclusion....

What's that old saying....Lies, damned lies, and statistics...

Post doesn't tell the whole story.

From the article:
Only 59% of South Africans are willing to move to another country for work, which is down from a 72% willingness level in 2018.

Young and highly educated South Africans aren’t willing to move abroad either – only 56% of young people and 61% of highly educated people in the country said they would be willing to relocate right now.

(my emphasis).

Also, there are only 1400 south africans sampled in the survey.

Speaking from present experience, emigrating RIGHT NOW is a real mission. On top of all the other "usual" stresses you'd have to deal with, you have uncertainty around flights, quarantines, self isolating, lockdowns in destination countries that make getting some things done really difficult, delays with documentation processing, economic uncertainty in your destination, exceptional difficulty in finding work unless you're very lucky or very special...

I bet if the wording was slightly different and didn't focus on "right now" but rather "in the next couple of years" the results would be significantly different.

... and inclining them towards countries that have done the best job of containing the coronavirus.

#2 Choice UK (previously Australia)

mkay then...

(I like both countries, but doing a great job with the virus was not exactly their strong points)

A sample size of 1,421 is enough to poll a population of 58 million with a 99% confidence level and 4% margin of error.

I still remember when we were 45 million.
Big increase in numbers it seems.
The world population growth is explosive.

What's happened is many people who wanted to go had a spanner in the works because of lockdown, then after lockdown its been harder to move over and some opportunities would have soured.

Also, I'm getting the feeling that those who wanted to go and have the means to go have now gone. The people who are still here either don't really want to leave or can't.

I also know quite a few people who have left since lockdown though so people are able to leave.

That's insane. I can't understand why people would want to move to the US right now for so many reasons.

UK also but I know its a gateway to for many people as they have ancestry claims.

From reading many posts here. I would rather settle in a place like the Netherlands or a Scandinavian country.
I've always had respect for Norway. Their financial sector and money management is top notch. A wealthy country.

Ironically their taxes are quite high, social democratic country.. just ironic when I hear people claim to want to go there but also claim taxes etc are a problem.

Uhm wrt article.. I doubt most will be wanting to move right now.. lots of risk for anyone with a family. Singles sure.. economic issues, immigrant relations, etc doesn’t make for the best time.

I'm not aware of their tax details or entire sector. It's like looking at a supercar. I want one.
The same with living in a nice country. Dreams.....

Yeah the Scandinavian countries sound and look great.... until you get to the weather, taxes, proximity to Russia and other bullshit.

I personally don't know how I'll cope with prolonged darkness/daylight and Sweden has been handing out pamphlets on how to prepare in case of an invasion/war.

I'll save those for holidays and not get called up for war if the Putin hits the fan.

Difference is there you actually get stuff from your taxes.

Yes .. my point was that this wasn’t always the case. Every awesome country you can list has a shitty past they got through and most of the time it was the locals biting the bullet, deciding on what’s important and then going for it. You can’t do that if country fights itself.

A SA equiv country of the past which many favor with big boy shoes is the US(which is changing).. with its many flaws and problems. The other countries many flee too have the economic, social, gov, native relations which are similar to ours just more advanced with a better working population. Key difference is decades after implementing they reaping benefits but the base they started from was better or had(continues with) fiscal support.

But my perspective is always from a negative state.. ie it’s easier to change something for the better in a failing system than one which fakes progress. I dunno maybes it because I usually join teams at inflection points or declines (meh.. life of graduates post 2008 sucks)
