Study shows e-voting could be a hit in SA

A study presented at the Independent Electoral Committees (IEC) electronic voting (e-voting) conference this week found that 79% of South Africans, especially those in rural areas, would be open to voting electronically.

Masego Sheburi, the IEC deputy chief electoral officer, told Newzroom Afrika that this indicates a shrinking digital divide in the country.

I'm all for electronic voting & perhaps Biometric voting since that could, if implemented well, be spoof proof.
However, I wouldn't trust a voting system built by our government .

Although my standards are pretty low with them, so I doubt they can build out even a basic voting system.

The IEC would be doing it, not the government.

I am in the industry. Already been doing it for multiple governments worldwide wide!

Time to wake up SA!

Make all the text too small for old people to read. That'll sort out the Boomers.

Make the process require a full minute of undivided attention while people next door are dying their hair and talking about gender assignments. That'll sort out Gen Z.

Ignoring all the corruption - if we had a e-voting setup what does this quote have to do with anything?

"“If you roll out website-based voting, it may alienate people and further expand the cases of inequality in society,” he said."

You would automatically get more people “showing up” on voting day for sure as there is almost no effort required.

And those who can’t do that can still do it the conventional way.

But we have more smartphones in this country than people so I can’t believe that would be many.

Sorry, is this the same IEC that has already been found to have lied during elections?, you know the same one that has its members appointed by the ANC?,... yeah lets not talk about the IEC and honesty in the same sentence.

No thanks.
Last election they tried using those ipads for the voter check in and it was a disaster.
I hear enough "The system is down" from every other Gov Dept, don't need that when I am trying to vote.

Also I don't trust it, there is no way any software and system is a 100% fail proof.
Yeah the old paper ballots are not 100% fraud proof but it's much harder to commit fraud at large scale using paper ballots.

That problem exists due to connectivity provided at each site. That goes away entirely if you are voting remotely.

Don’t know how you get to the logic.

It’s infinitely more observable and auditable digitally.

Your argument is like saying cash is a better solution than digital banking.

I highly Doubt this will be successful, were after all a 3rd world craphole with barely functional roads and electricity,
to go high tech is only inviting more corruption than there already is with pen and paper.

can it be done? yes, should it be done with the amount of corruption and incompetence out there?
dont think so, asking for trouble we already have.
