Hi everyone.
Just wanted to ask if anyone here has studied at Boston? I am about to join them doing a year long course in IT and just wanted to hear your opinions? Are they a decent crowd? I am based in Cape Town for now.

*Also if someone has other alternatives I would greatly appreciate them.
*I would like to start as soon as possible.

Thanks

I'm very passionate about education and its great that you not only starting to study but you're asking a very important question: What's its value?

I don't know the syllabus or the course you are doing but all one year courses have the same outcome and that is to set the foundation for future studies.

You won't get a job with a 1yr course, not even a 3 yr course, those days are long gone and will never return. But, you do however get a licence to go to interviews. When employers get 30, 40 or even 100 CV's for a junior position there are two things they use to filter out prospective candidates and that is work experience and education.

Once you are in the interview its all up to you and your attitude to get the job.

As for studies, well if you have the financial means to study full time at uni for a degree then I would rather do that. Personally I'm doing my BSc Informatics with UNISA part time while working and 3 years ago was the last time during an interview where somebody really looked at my education and that was a UNISA certificate which would be on par with your studies.

The best I can say is use this following year to work on a profile. Do some free work for a business that they can give you testimonials <-- very very powerful things as they can lead to more "free" work. You might even get offered a job through referrals as the best jobs are never advertised (I got 2 awesome jobs like that).

Get your Linkedin profile sorted and don't mention any crap you did at school, focus only what your doing this year. Agents love Linkedin even if you need BS a little. A lot of Cape Town IT companies will use Linkedin so once again, its to get the interview. Also try and network as much as possible, you never know.

All the best.

Thought you meant Boston College, in Massachusetts. Was about to recommend Peter Kreeft's philosophy classes. I recommend them anyway.

If you are referring to Boston House in the CDB, I have a mate from WHK , that attended the place back in the late 80's..... He tuned out alright for himself, even has time to run one of Namibia's more popular bands, Double Trouble....

Depends on the path you are taking, if you are going for the technical based course(A+, N+, MCITP etc.) or any internationally recognized certification I recommend them a lot, their method of studying is very good, the last time I worked for them they used Labsim to conduct their lectures, which was a great tool in my opinion since it has video lectures, practice labs (simulations) and exams that prepare you for the certification exam. Frod as m time to time practicals are conducted as well with your training adviser.

yer that's the route I had in mind. Problem is that they told me it was just videos and I felt like it was robbery. Guess I have to watch my CbtNuggets videos and just sit the exams ...if that's possible!
