Stupid question time. When will HD become SD?

Not sure, but I'm yet to hear an advert for "Dexter Season 6 - now available in colour"...

please.. its not colour...

Its TechniColor.... get your terms right :p

I'm not sure I follow your logic here. What was standard definition 20 years ago is surely not what it is today? Or is it?

From memory it actually is I think. will do some digging to find out though.

Mostly red.

There is screens developed to handle 3600x2160 and higher, but the bandwidth needs and storage requirements is extreme. So, I doubt it will happen soon. I rather suspect that depth quality and 3D will become the features.

USB1 will always be USB1, USB2 will always be USB2

Its just the way they named it, the HD standard is cast in stone. Next they will have Super HD or something like that (I actually heard the term but forgot it)

Another example is HIFI, high fidelity. It was a standard of quality.

EDIT: I saw a daigram and I think there have only been 4 standards : B/w, colour, SD and HD

Ah okay. If so, then I still think that at some point, the acronym will become so mainstream that it will be replaced and/or fall away entirely...

Standard definition was only defined recently (recently being when ever). What ever was used 20 years ago wasn't defined as standard definition

What about UHD? Ultra High Def!? Where do I register that term & acronym to claim my future licensing disputes from manufacturers?!

What would Apple's new retina display be classed as on the new iPad?

Actually, during my time at Sony, I was told that Japan has had "HD" for well over 20 years. It was nowhere near 1080i, nevermind 1080p, and the title was used to describe it as something better than the standard of the day.

UHD - Ultra High Definition - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_High_Definition_Television

Many vendors have just been refering to the next gen (resolution) TVs as 4K (i.e. just over quad FHD or 4096x2160)
