Very dumb question. Anyway can someone tell me what's the speed of iBurst? Is it one speed only..and what may that be ?

1060Kbits/second max

Most ppl get +-800kbits AFAIK

Real world speed 500Kbps

The advertised speed might be 1024Kbps, however in the real world it is around 500Kbps mark.

Should the tower you are connecting to be congested you are looking at an even lower figure.

To be objective, I would say you are looking at an equivalent of a 512 K ADSL line on a good day. To achieve this, the set-up cost will be several times higher than that of installing a fixed line.

If you are considering this, rather wait for your ADSL to be installed unless you absolutely sure you prepared for the hassle and drama to get it to work.

What do you mean by hassle? With Iburst you get connected instantly. No waiting for ADSL lines, No installation, it's mobile and faster if you have good coverage. Do you actually think that a 512kb/s DSL line is constant?

Well, it's definitely more constant than a congested tower...

Even with a congested tower, if you're zoned for good coverage, then it will still be faster than DSL. Iburst is the only real alternative to ADSL from Telkom, considering cost and speed. If you are willing to wait weeks, maybe months for your line, then get ADSL. However, if you want to be connected in less than 2 days, order Iburst.

I agree with GBM here. You may have spend an enormous amout of time setting your iBurst up. but others like Mr.H with equal or better performance than you simply plugged in their UTD. He might have put it by a window, bu tthat was hardly even necessary.

And all the people who I know with an antenna set-up simply had it done by the reseller or iBurst techie who comes to install. It only costs an extra R350 for the normal iBurst modem and they would charge around R250 to set it all p if you dont want to do it yourself.

Oh, but 512kb ADSL is definitely more constant. But I think alot of people can get better than 512kb, really. You dont even need a 100% connection to get more than 512kb even during the day.

EDIT: I just did a speed test and got 440kbps, but thats with 3 lights, hit 4 lights once during the test. I'm sure Mr.H or even you should be hitting over 512kb even now during the day and much more than that at night, at least 800kb. But ofcourse it varies for everyone, no fixed speed.

No iBurst it seems...

Hell no! ..but with all the time I had to spend setting up iBurst on a 0 load tower, with an antenna, less than 1.5 km away to get a speed of around 512 - I think they should be paying me.

If only you could just plonk it on your desk and it would work (>512) in Cape Town’s CBD it would be a miracle.

Maybe you have had it lucky, but I’ve had to set-up six of these iBurst UTD’s in Cape Town and not had the good fortune with any of them to get constant speeds exceeding 512, without having to go to extraordinary lengths to achieve this.

I have had to resort to obtaining advice and several site visits of no less than five highly skilled Tradepage, Nowire and iBurst technicians, including Shaun Green.

So maybe you were just lucky.

No, I think its more a case of you being unlucky. Being in the City Centre obviously has much worse performance during the day than most suburban areas where most people will be setting up their iBurst.

Do you really only get 512kb performance with your current set up? You have almost the best signal around. Thats hard to believe, like I said I just got 440kb during the worst of the day and thats on really bad signal. I have around -100Db where you get more like 50-60Db.

I have been to 3 friends houses with my iBurst, they are in Plumstead so good performance from the tower, and it was absolutely just a case of putting down the modem and getting >512kb speeds straight away, no set up at all.

Welcome to the CBD...

Well after 11pm my connection does exceed 1Mbps, but that is of no use to me or any of my clients!

I also thought it would be possible to achieve speeds of 512, therefore me contacting all the technicians. Each of them just seem to shrug their shoulders and give you a blank stare, once they have gone through the whole process of eliminating all possible causes for the poor speeds.

lol. No im just joking, but nice speeds, really.

I've got to move back to Plumstead.

What you need is for iBurst to put up that promised tower you've been waiting for.
By the time you move back here my tower will probably be saturated.

That speed test was done with a "66" in the IP
