Subaru Teases Biggest Model Yet: Ascent Seven-Seater

Remember the three-row Ascent SUV Concept that Subaru revealed at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year? Well, a full production model is on the way, set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of the month.

The Japanese automaker has revealed a teaser image of the new seven-seater SUV, billing it as the “biggest Subaru yet”. The brand furthermore describes the new Ascent as “family-sized, versatile and capable”.

While the production vehicle’s exact dimensions have yet to be revealed, the concept measures 5 050 mm long, 1 990 mm wide and 1 840 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2 970 mm.

Expect the production Ascent to be powered by a turbocharged boxer engine directing drive to all four corners courtesy of the automaker’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

Subaru of America Inc., building on nine consecutive years of sales growth, debuted the all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent. The highly anticipated three-row SUV is the biggest Subaru ever built and is designed for active families on-the-go. Expanding on renowned Subaru strengths, the Ascent delivers an unparalleled driving experience with a spacious interior, comfortable and flexible seating options and a host of new safety, driver assist and in-vehicle technologies.

The Ascent is an all-new model and comes with three rows of seating, with available bench or captain's chairs in the second row. The SUV is built on a strengthened and extended version of the Subaru Global Platform with extensive use of high-strength steel. With a focus on durability, rigidity and vibration resistance, the Ascent platform is designed to provide a quiet interior and excellent driving feel. Powered by an all-new 2.4-liter BOXER engine, the Ascent comes standard with a new version of Subaru's high-torque Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission) and legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system- all wrapped in a stylish and rugged design with a commanding presence. The new U.S.-built Ascent will be available in base, Premium, Limited and Touring trim lines when it arrives in Subaru retailers in early summer.

The Family-focused SUV

The all-new Subaru Ascent, with a 113.8-in. wheelbase, is the largest Subaru ever built and is the mobile headquarters for the entire family. With 153.5 cubic feet of passenger volume, plus ample cargo space, the Ascent provides room for every passenger and their gear. Rear doors open 75 degrees for improved access to the third row. Eight USB charging ports are available throughout the cabin and a 120-volt power outlet based in the rear of the center console allow charging for multiple electronic devices. With 19 standard cup and bottle holders, every passenger's beverage is secure and close at hand.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent offers the optimal blend of SUV capability and car-like ride and handling with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, 18- inch wheels and four-wheel independent suspension. The 8.7 inches of ground clearance for all models is greater than many SUVs, yet the Ascent maintains a comfortably low step-in height for both front and rear passenger entry. Active Torque Vectoring, first introduced on the WRX ® and WRX STI® performance models, is also standard.

The three-row SUV is powered by an all-new 2.4-liter BOXER engine that uses a combination of direct fuel injection, high compression (10.6:1), Subaru Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS), a twin-scroll turbocharger and an intercooler to achieve outstanding performance and high efficiency. The engine produces 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, accompanied by a broad torque curve that peaks at 277 lb.ft. over a 2,000-4,800-rpm engine speed range. All trim levels are paired with a high-torque Lineartronic CVT featuring an 8-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters as well as X-Mode® with Hill Descent Control. This powertrain allows up to 5,000-lb. towing capacity, the most of any Subaru in history. Trailer Stability Assist helps to maintain vehicle stability while towing. The TSA system utilizes yaw sensors to monitor trailer sway and then can brake individual wheels to stabilize the vehicle and trailer. The Ascent is not only powerful but also efficient with exemplary fuel economy that provides more than a 500-mile range on a single tank.

Huge New Subaru Ascent Revealed With Eight Seats

Subaru has taken the wraps off its new three-row Ascent SUV, billing it as “the biggest Subaru ever built”.

The all-new model comes with three rows of seating, with the choice of a bench or captain’s chairs in the second row resulting in either an eight- or seven-seat configuration.

Built on an extended version of Subaru’s latest architecture, the Ascent is powered by an all-new turbocharged 2,4-litre boxer engine, and comes standard with a further-fettled continuously variable transmission and trademark symmetrical all-wheel drive. The horizontally opposed four-cylinder produces 194 kW and 376 N.m.

The new Ascent is 4 998 mm long, 1 930 mm wide and 1 819 mm high, making it the largest Subaru ever built. The wheelbase comes in at 2 890 mm.

Eight USB charging ports are scattered throughout the cabin along with a 120-volt power outlet sited in the rear of the centre console, while as many as 19 standard cup- and bottle-holders are offered. There’s also three-zone automatic climate control and second-row reading lights as standard.

The all-new Ascent will be produced at Subaru’s plant in Indiana, alongside the Outback, Legacy and Impreza.

Subaru launches new Ascent large SUV for US market

The firm's largest SUV yet is built on a new platform offering enhanced safety, can seat up to nine and has 19 cup holders

Subaru has unveiled the new Ascent, a large SUV that can seat up to eight passengers, designed for the North American market, at the Los Angeles motor show.

The all-wheel drive machine is powered by a new 256bhp version of the Japanese firm’s 2.4-litre Boxer engine, and built on a new version of Subaru’s Global Platform that has been extended and strengthened. The Ascent was first shown at the New York motor show in January.

That platform features a ring-shaped reinforced frame design, developed to increase crash protection. It also features stiffened joints between structures tin increase stability, which Subaru says has resulted in improved handling and comfort and reduced road noise.

The Ascent has been designed as a ‘family focused’ SUV, with up to nine seating configurations, depending on seating choices for the second and third row of seats. It has a wheelbase of 2890mm and up to 2055 litres of luggage capacity.

Inside, the Ascent gets Subaru’s Starlink infotainment system, with either a 6.5 or 8-inch touchscreen, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features in-car Wi-Fi, along with eight USB ports and 19 cup holders.

There are understood to currently be no plans to bring the Ascent to the UK market.

I Found All 19 Of The New Subaru Ascent's Cupholders

Nineteen cupholders. Nineteen cupholders in a car that seats a maximum of eight people. That’s nearly 2.5 cupholders per occupant. Other publications, unaware of the importance of hydration, thought that perhaps this is too many cupholders. They are wrong.

It was the last media day of the LA Auto Show. Things had started winding down hours ago. There was hardly anybody left. Which was fine with me, because I had a very important mission and I didn’t want to have to stop and chat with people along the way: I had been tasked with seeking out all 19 of the big Subaru’s cupholders. I was to go and find a legend.

The white Ascent, pictured above, actually had a decent amount of dog hair still left over inside of it from its reveal. I thought that touch made it more authentic. Armed with my camera and a general sense of where designers usually put cupholders, I went to work.

The first two were easy enough to find: right in the center console.

But then there were also an additional two on each front door.

The middle armrest for the second row had a fold-down set of cupholders, but that would also mean that nobody could sit in the middle seat while they were being used. I didn’t know how to feel about that. Sacrificing a person for two drinks? Maybe, if they were Mexican Cokes.

The back doors had three cupholders apiece: one near the handle and two down below.

The third row cupholders were located beneath the windows in the armrests. I counted two apiece back there and then stopped, confused: That made only 18. Where was the 19th one? I looked everywhere, including in the glovebox, beneath the seats and pulled down both sun visors. No dice.

Then I realized that one set of the third row cupholders actually had three instead of two. Success!

My mission finally accomplished, I was able to keep my job. Thank you reading.

CarPlay comes standard with Subaru’s brand new Ascent, pre-orders now open

Subaru has opened up pre-orders for its newest vehicle, the 2019 Ascent. The new 3-row SUV comes with CarPlay standard and joins some of the company’s other vehicles to offer Apple’s in-car platform.

Subaru previously made CarPlay a standard feature on the 2018 Crosstrek and also brought Apple’s in-car platform as an option to its popular Legacy sedan. The car maker first brought standard CarPlay to its 2017 Impreza.

Subaru showed off the 2019 Ascent at the LA Auto Show in November last year, and the company has now released pricing and details on the largest ever Subaru.

The 2019 Ascent comes in four trim levels starting at $31,995 and Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto come standard with the 6.5-inch Subaru Starlink Multimedia system. The SUV also has four USB ports and a 19 cupholders (?!).

With the three higher trim levels, customers will get an 8-inch Subaru Starlink Multimedia system for an even larger CarPlay experience. The highest trim level, Touring features Harman Kardon speakers, a 120-volt outlet, 8 USB ports and more.

SA designer renders Subaru double-cab bakkie to battle Toyota Hilux

A South African designer living in France has released renders of a Subaru-badged double-cab bakkie he dreamt up to take on Toyota’s Hilux.

Neil de Vos, an industrial designer who way back in 2012 placed third in CAR magazine’s Design A Car competition, used Subaru’s Ascent SUV as a base for his rendering.

For the record, the three-row Ascent is Subaru’s largest model yet, but is underpinning by a unibody platform rather than the ladder-frame chassis used by the likes of the Hilux and Ford Ranger.

Over 250,000 Subaru Ascents Recalled Because They Might Catch Fire

The recall includes Ascents from the 2019 to 2022 model years.

If you have a 2019 to 2022 Subaru Ascent, be careful. Subaru has announced a recall that affects more than a quarter million Ascents due to a risk that they may catch on fire. Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted within 60 days, but in the meantime, you can enter your VIN on the NHTSA’s website to check if your Ascent is part of the recall.

According to Subaru:

The ground bolt that secures the ground terminal of the Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heater may have been improperly fastened during vehicle production. This potential condition may result in the melting of the ground terminal and surrounding components, increasing the risk of fire when the PTC heater is in operation. There have been no crashes or injuries due to this issue.

For all the potentially affected vehicles, Subaru retailers will replace the PTC Heater Ground Bolts and replace the ground wire and connector holder if necessary. A small percentage of vehicles, estimated at 0.6%, will require ground and connector replacement. The inspection and repair will be completed at no cost to the customer.

Due to the risk of the affected Ascents catching on fire and potentially causing additional damage, until the vehicles have been inspected by a Subaru dealer and repaired if necessary, owners should avoid parking the car in their garage at home. Subaru also suggests owners park away from carports or other structures, and says not to leave the Ascent running unattended.
