Subwoofer

Inside another cabinet: We understand that, sometimes, certain circumstances can’t be surmounted. But you need to know that this is the worst possible scenario. Putting a sub inside another cabinet pretty much defeats the purpose of a subwoofer. Those non-directional low frequencies need room to breathe in the room, and you’ve just crammed them in a closet and shut the door.

Placing subwoofers and to a lesser degree speakers in cabinetry can be a tricky proposition unless the subwoofer or speaker is included as part of the design of the cabinetry and the design of the room. It is my opinion that this should be done only as a last resort.

So I guess I'll exclude it from the design- but I assume it's ok if the sub is directly next to the cabinet or do I need to leave some space?

Best way to find the best placement of a sub, I found, was to use the subwoofer-crawl method.

Place sub in a corner and leave it freestanding.

I use YPAO to calibrate the sound in my room but maybe Boston or whatever receiver you have has a similar tool.
 
Build it into the couch, the missus wll also appreciate this :D
