I want to pop in tomorrow ... Just want to see the best way is not to eat anything tomorrow morning?

They just prick my finger?

If you're getting a cholesterol test make sure they do a proper analysis and not just a total count. The individual numbers are more meaningful than the total.
And for that, one vial.

Don't have breakfast, finger prick or 2, and most likely blood pressure will also be taken.

Depends on the reason for the test, not all require a fasting level. What does the request form state?

at pathcare type places they draw a few ml blood.
At pharmacy they prick.
nothing by mouth after 2200.

They should have told you when they scheduled the test whether you need to fast or not, and for how long.

But sugar tests, in most cases, require you to be in the fasted state.

You must not eat or drink after 20:00 before the test the next day.

Its called a fasting test, 24 hours is a bit much.

This. No eating for 12 hours. The only decent test is the fasting one. Testing with a drop of blood from a pricked finger is a waste of time.

I thought they use the pricking finger as a preliminary?

That's what they said to me many years back. Should that be abnormal, then they do blood

You know you can just go to a Dischem or Clicks Pharmacy for those basic tests, right? If you're with Discovery, the tests are even free once a year :)

If you want accurate results rather go to your local GP and get a referral.

You then go to one of the blood depots and they actually draw a vial of blood and send it off for testing.

As mentioned above, the Fasting Cholesterol test will give you a wealth of information, everything from HDL, LDL, triglycerides.

Most people who do the test will find high levels of LDL and triglycerides due to lifestyle habits.

If you like me, you have to do this test every year. I have Hypercholesterolemia as a result of bad genetics so know the drill.

You do not need a referral, but the results will be sent to your Doctor. Some labs will not let the Patient have the results, but this can be challenged as you are paying for the service and are entitled to them.
