Some 5000 sugar workers are set to embark on a strike for higher wages on Tuesday following a deadlock during negotiations, Tongaat Hulett Limited said.

Employees from Tongaat Hulett and Illovo Sugar are demanding a 10.5 percent wage increase, while the employers' final offer stands at 8.5 percent.

Tongaat Hulett spokeswoman Michelle Jean-Louis said on Monday that the workers were entitled to strike.

"In terms of the negotiation process, an official strike notice was issued on 23 May. Having served this notice, employees are entitled to embark on a protected strike with effect from Tuesday 27 May."

She said union representatives and sugar industry management had been in meetings on Monday trying to find a satisfactory outcome for everyone involved.

I thought of posting that exact same pun.... but then I thought better of it. :erm:

Another case of weccas striking for higher wages in a dying business. Correct me if I am wrong, but Tongaat Hulett's massive profits do not come from their sugar business. Mostly from their property developments and land sales.

I always love how they strike over the most paltry difference in increases, while usually losing at least one month of their wages. If only people realized that extra 2% takes years to actually make a return.
