A lady at work is looking for a decent Netbook in the price range R2,000 - R3,000.

She needs it for surfing and loading photos.

Any suggestions?

At kalahari.net I spotted a Gigabyte Q Series Netbook for R 1,999.00 . Any comment?

Sorry Satanboy, Don't want to hijack your thread but didn't want to start a new one when it's similar.

^^That's not a netbook. Seems you can get something similar for around R3k new, so it would depend on its age and condition.

The Gigabyte netbook seems like a good deal, the same model from laptopdirect is R2647. Seems the Atom N550 is a dual core, but it probably needs more RAM though.

All I can say is that if size is important, go for it.

I would rather max budget out and go for an entry level 15" laptop. Much faster, easier to use, upgradeable, etc.

Ironically entry level 15.6 inch notebooks cost the same as most netbooks. In fact some netbooks, notably AMD E-350 equipped netbooks, go for over R5k, more than entry level laptops.

I would look at a laptop with an AMD Fusion APU. I saw a netbook the other day with a C50 in it, for about R3300 or so, which is not bad.

Whatever you do don't get something based on Atom. Preferably you want an AMD E-350.

What about these?

both from http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/

Pretty sure the first one will be faster in most things except games. The second one will be a bit behind in CPU power but ahead in GPU power, not that it matters. Neither is really what you would call a powerhouse gaming laptop.

If the second one were actually a netbook, it might be worth it. However, since the first one will be quite a bit snappier, I cant see a reason not to get it.

Unless I'm wrong and Fusion E350's are much faster than I think.

My apologises for also hijacking this thread but look at these notebook deals we doing today,
buying a second hand notebook is like buying a second hand car you never know what is wrong with it until you use it

I just bought 4x Second hand VW Polo's for my staff to use already three had to go back for repairs, out that one had to be replaced.

That machine is fine for surfing and storing photos. I wouldn't use it for photo editing though - the colours/brightness is a bit fickle on a netbook. Upgrading the RAM to 2GB would also help with performance.

Managed to get it for R1500. it was bought new in March 2011, so it's in very good condition. that clear sticker at the back of the laptop is still on it.

Loving it :D
