My ageing A64 3500+ is starting to show its age. I need an upgrade. I'm just looking at replacing the box as my monitor/keyboard/mouse etc are all newer components. Budget - less than R10k.

What would you suggest I look at? Its been about 5 years since I've really done any real research in new hardware so I'm a bit out of touch with whats good and what's not. I was under the impression that ATI/AMD were out of the picture but they seem to be making a comeback. I might play a few games but I'm really looking for something that will handle Windows 7 well.

Which i7 would you go for? Baring in mind I want to preserve my entire old PC. (Ie. new PC must include case/PSU) etc

Surely a 4850 won't keep up with an i7? Rather spend less on the CPU and get a better GPU.

This is what I would buy:

Amd socket AM3 Phenom2 x4, Quad-core 955 (3.2Ghz) Black edition R2959.19

BIOSTAR TA790GX T-Series Motherboard, AM3 , DDR3, ATX R1358.08

HIS HD 4890 1GB (256bit) GDDR5 PCIe R2852.62

Western Digital CAViAR AV-GP WD3200AVVS 320gb, S-ata2 R504.24

Kingston ValueRam KVR1333D3N9/2G , 2Gb/2048mb ddr3-1333 , CL9 R479.55

Kingston ValueRam KVR1333D3N9/2G , 2Gb/2048mb ddr3-1333 , CL9 R479.55

Corsair TX650W , Eps12V , ATX R1259.31

Total: R9892.54

All prices from prophecy.co.za

Just to add I have that 23.6" Samsung display which has HDMI/DVI input.

M4A78T-E ASUS AMD Socket AM3, AMD 790GX, 5200MT/s, 4xDual DDR3 1600(O.C.), 2xPCI-x16(Hybrid CrossFire), Onboard VGA, 2xPCI-x1, 2xPCI, 1xATA133, 5xSATA II(Raid 0,1,5,10), Gbe Lan, 8ch-Sound, Max 12xUSB, 2xIEEE 1394, ATX R 1,379 excl. R 1,572 incl.

2GB DDR3-1333 R 310 excl. R 353 incl. x2
650W ATX Power Supply- Huntkey Titan
HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI-I / TVO HDMI (Vapor X Cool) R 2,199 excl. R 2,506 incl.
AMD Phenom II 955 , 8MB, AM3, 3.2GHZ L2 Cache Quad Core (Black Edition) R 2,155 excl. R 2,456 incl.

I would rather go amd and get a much better vga card for the gaming. I would not pay prophecy 500 bucks more for a cpu though either. 1.2k for a 650w psu is crazy in my opinion.

I'd also suggest going for best value-for-money in your overall PC.
You'll end up with a much better overall pc if you go AMD than if you went i7

ASUS AMD Socket AM3, AMD 790GX - R1572
AMD Phenom 9950 - R1538 OR AMD Phenom II 955 - R2456
3 x 2GB DDR1333 - R353 x2 - R706
Seagate 1TB - R877
DVD-RW - SATA - R239
ATi 4890 - R2506
Huntkey Titan 650W - R796

Total with Phenom II 955 = R9152 (with Phenom 9950 - R8234), which leaves about R1000 odd to get a nice case, and here your own preferences play the biggest role.
All prices are from pcint.co.za, unless you're in Durban (and can buy from Zones), you'll struggle to beat these prices.

Don't get a crap power supply. There's a reason i specced a corsair. The cheapest i'd go is coolermaster. Also the tri core 720 will outperform the 9950.

Intel Q8200 at R1533 from PCInt beats 9950/720.

Intel Q9550 at R2295 > P2 955 at R2456.

How is AMD better value for money again?

Not sure in all honesty, i guess maybe the mobo's are cheap and you get tons of features or something.

I would say though the 955 is over priced but the mobo's is awesome for 1.5k

/watches as the amd fanboys fetch their pitchforks and head towards postman.
