Recently started playing Warcraft III again over Battle.net, currently I play on the european gateway as I tend to have the best connection there, sure I lose the occasional game gue to lag, but overall it seems fine. I was just wondering if there is possibly some small way I could increase my ping? I don't know if it can get better, just thought I'd take a shot. Supplied below is a 20 ping run of the conditions I normally play in.

See at that highlighted spot how the ping jumps from 10ms to 374. THAT'S where all the problems lie. The jump from S.A. to London.

Now if Jbg to Cape Town is 1000 Km and only pings 10ms, then Jbg to London, which is approx. 6000 Km , should only take 60ms.

Conclusion: Telkom is bouncing us via sattelite, hence the excessive lag time. It's a lot longer route via space and I seem to remember reading that Telkom owns the ground station here so more than likely cheaper for them. Where is this undersea cable everybody keeps talking about.

Ill do a test tonight from home on my ISDN line and check out the ping. Im sure that if your traffic was going via satellite your pings would be alot higher [around 750ms]... but I could be mistaken. I think your ping is quite high as perhaps it might have something to do with the port shaping that Telkom does... this is just an assumption though.

If you want good pings for your gaming, you WILL have to get unshaped ADSL. If you have seen any posts from Sybawoods, you would have seen he gets a good consistent +- 250ms to Europe and the USA on certain servers.

here is my ping... obviously its an ISDN line and is different to ADSL:

Ping statistics for 213.248.106.204:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 20, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 303ms, Maximum = 320ms, Average = 309ms

YOU SHOULD expect a better ping then this by around 20-30ms using unshaped ADSL...

oh yes... BUT as Im sure you know... unshaped ADSL is VERY VERY expensive! And as usual, Telkom WILL NOT gaurantee latencies or anything like that.
