Hi,

I am looking to replace my CRT (remember those?) with a 42 or 50 inch Plasma. Any brand / model recommendations? I would rather spend a bit more and get something decent, but the more I look into this the more confused I get.

Thanks,
Russell.

Why not rather take a look at LCD TVs? They are far more popular.
Your best bet would be looking at LG and Samsung. Sony is good too, but is often much more expensive.
Not entirely sure about precise models, as you get some with different features. Just look at shops for the size you want.
All you need to make sure of is that it has all the inputs/outputs you need (HDMI x a few, RCA, VGA for pc, etc)

Russel S, don't forget what you want! Look at your uses for the TV, and the different pro's and cons.

Have a look at www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com. There you can find a lot of answers for LCD's and Plasma's. If i can suggest you don't go to AVSforums. Reading through those posts, will make you more confused and actually never want to buy any TV.

In my experience, i have an LCD and recently a 50" plasma. The picture on the Plasma is fantastic. I game on my LCD though. In my opinion, TV, HTPC, Mede8er for the plasma, gaming, PC, console for the LCD, although Ps3/Xbox looks excellent on Plasma.

Good Luck

Hi Russel,

I would definitely recommend a plasma if you are planning to use it for TV and movies. Choose the size depending on your viewing distance... I assume that a large part of your viewing will still be standard definition, so going too big might not be a good idea (depending on viewing distance of course). Don't be fooled by the full HD "demo" footage that they display in the shops... rather make them show you normal DSTV or whatever source you'll use at home - measure the distance to your viewing position at home and compare at the shop :)

With regards to a good brand, I'd only really choose Panasonic... Pioneer if you can find one (and afford it). Only problem is that the only place you can get Panasonic at the moment is Audio Vision (they imported the plasmas from Japan themselves)... Panasoinc SA is changing ownership/management, so the other retailers don't have stock. I think things might get sorted out around June/July.

Cheers
Greg

Maybe because he only needs 720p, watches sport, and mainly SD TV? Plasma is superior in those aspects, if not all.

@Russell S: Just search, or scroll through the pages of this TV sub-forum. Here's a good thread - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?213782-Plasma-vs-LCD - Samsung B530 & B550 (could be B430 and B450) get a good rep.

I wouldn't hesitate getting this - http://www.game.co.za/portal/game20...tryleaflets/rsa/leaflet-rsa-2010-03-04-19.jpg (Samsung B430 @ R7499 with DVD player).

Echo plasma virtues for you

Allow me to humbly echo the previous posters regarding seriously considering a plasma for yourself.
I would rank the plasma's as follows in terms of trying to get to a crt performance on a larger flat panel:

1.Panasonic - reliable, well made, great contrast, but S.A is a bit stiffed on the 2009 models - 2010 models should be dropping in May/June and they look and perform really well so far - checkout the following forum http://www.avforums.com/forums/plas...duct-information-pricing-thread-part-2-a.html
2.Samsung - great price, good performers too - 720p sets are a real bargain.Find a nice close-out price on a 42b450 or 50b550 if you can.2010 models are also dropping mid-year and they have made improvements to contrast, reducing reflections in daylight viewing etc.
3. LG - a class below, but good if your budget is tight.

Hope this helps
