Sun Microsystems takeover bid approved by EU

Good thing MySQL is GPL. If things do go pear-shaped the community can fork it if push comes to shove (and Larry Ellison looks like he likes to shove).

The probe concluded that another open-source database, PostgreSQL, "is considered by many database users to be a credible alternative to MySQL and could be expected to replace to some extent the competitive force currently exerted by MySQL

Are they saying this only went through because of PostgreSQL? What if it didn't exist?

MySQL has already been forked due mainly, by the looks of it, to infighting between Sun and Monty Widenius.

It is called MariaDB and it looks like a return to the original philosophy of MySQL. A DBMS that doesn't sport all of the features of other major DBMSs, but offers speed, reliability, scalability and ease of use through simplicity.

MariaDB was formed when Sun started adding features to MySQL (if I recall the serious feature additions started with version 4.5 with stuff like stored procedures and the like). Apparently Monty wanted a return to the old MySQL.

Another fork is called Drizzle.

Then I would be sad. PostgreSQL isn't going anywhere anytime soon though. AFAIK PostgreSQL has no major financial backers that make up the majority of it's funding (like Sun for MySQL), could be wrong though.
