Anyone used the Sunix 2400 RAID card?

I'm considering buying one for my PC so I don't have to upgrade the motherboard and at around R500 it sounds like a decent deal.

Is the Sil3132 a good Sata RAID chipset and will I see good performance running 2 x 80GB Raptors in RAID0 on this card?

Just spoke with my storageslut buddy (yes, THAT one) :D and, with compleatly thumbsuck counting of 'seconds', have just timed the following:
  • PC1 with that Sunix and 2x 7200rpm Seagate drives at SATA2: about 7sec to boot to XP account login (USER/PASS prompt)
  • PC2 with 4x 36GB Raptors at SATA1: more than three times as long to get to the same place in Vista.
  • PC3: EIGHT  7200rpm 80GB Seagates in SATA2: about 21sec to the same place.
Your take-away from this: SATA2's 3GB/s transfer rate really does make a significant difference: vin ordinaire 7200rpm drives in RAID0 (and these are ALL connected in RAID0) can spank the daylights out of SATA1 Raptors (yes, I wanted to cry too; it's just wrong). Oh, and that card is good ..even great.. bang-for-buck ..and the improvement PCIe is over (now ancient) PCI. Oh, and the counting started after (various) BIOS POSTs (fancypants RAID cards make you wait an age while they sort themselves out!) and the windows logo startup appeared.

Note: if we remember, we'll count up the boot time on the 8-way SAS drive system when it gets back here...

So this card works well then with 2x80GB SATA2 3Gbps 10K Raptors;)

At R388 ex vat I reckon I'll have me one then.

Hmmm, suddenly my PC is looking very good.

Cool, currently with 1 of those drives I'm getting about 8.9ms seek times and and 249mbps throughput.

Just bought the card along with some Vantec cooling for the drives and will give it a whirl and feedback tonight with 64bit XP on the machine.

Maybe I should just got Windows 7 64Bit. Ho hum, what to do.
