Has anyone entered a Sunsilk competition recently? I sms'd my barcode and immediately received a reply saying I won a prize, and to phone an 0861 number to claim it... this makes me a bit sceptical about the whole thing.

Has anyone else 'won' anything, and is it a real prize?

Cath how did this SMS cost? Ever thought you are feeding the machine?

Believe me, I don't send premium rate sms's without weighing up the costs and benefits. And checking the cost of the sms at smscode.co.za as well.

Okay, after that fascinating derailment by the pumpkin king... does anyone have an actual answer to my question? Picard, why do you say I was conned?

All the comps are cons and they make so much money, 1.50 seems cheap but has anyone here ever met anyone who has won a comp on a cellphone?

It is kinda like scratch cards, 99% of them are not winning tickets but they make millions every month.

Did you phone the number?

No, not yet. I wanted to find out (a) whether it's a real prize, or one of those Edgars "mini makeover" type prizes, and (b) how much it costs per minute (don't want to phone a premium rate phoneline and pay a fortune per minute for a crappy prize).

And BTW, this is a proper competition - it's run by Sunsilk, a well-known brand. It's not like it's one of those dodgy TV/sms competitions :)

Yes, like coca-cola? Simba? Willards? i could go on for a page.

Come on now cath, these are money making scams and people entering these comps are feeding the machine.

There is a good chance the prize won't be interesting and that this is an identity harvesting exercise for a future mass mailing/sms campaign but if you're willing to take the chance and possibly lose a few bucks then I'd say go for it.

Okay. Could we cut all the judgements and whether it's a scam or not, please? Not everything has to be a debate and an argument.

It's a simple question: has anyone entered the sunsilk competition, did you win anything, and what did you win?

It is possible you won a prize. On the premium cellphone rates, expect to listen to a loooong intro before they tell you what you won.

Cath, I recently entered a Nivea competition and won a prize.

After much drama, it was delivered. It was a pair of sunglasses - I ended up giving it away, because it is not my style :)
