Super impressed with viber

Well,
This isn't our goal to be honest - we're not here to promote our application, since it's one of those apps that people just hear about and download ;)

Rather - we show presence all across the Web to make sure there are zero users who are left with questions or technical issues. In addition, we try to update our users with the latest info about the app, so they stay up to date with our plans and development.

Speaking of technical difficulties, I tried a Viber call to a pal o' mine earlier today, from my Defy (not updated) *cringe, I am not worthy* on Virgin Mobile with what the app indicated as excellent signal to his shiny new RAZR on Vodacom. And all I heard was this vicious jack-hammering sound, both times I tried to make a call. Oh, I was in the Market yesterday and did a mass-update of all my apps so you can count on my being current in that respect.

Is that enough to go on or do you need more? (Viber actually working is kinda central to my immediate future comms plans with my SO, so this is *not* encouraging!)

Hi bdt,
Have you tested Viber when both sides are connected to a high-speed WiFi network? does this problem occur in that scenario also?

In addition, please specify what Android version is installed on your Defy, and whether or not it's running a Custom ROM.

IOW test over an adsl connection - haven't tried that yet, will do and get back to you.

Okay, it's on the default, as shipped Vodascum-branded 2.1, specifically it shows Moto_Version2.51.2.MB525.Vodacome.en.GB with firmware version 2.1-update1 and kernel 2.6.29 ..and now I feel all naked and exposed (and not in a good way)

This means your Android is of 2.1 version, right?
Have you considered upgrading to a newer version of Android?

Have considered, yes; have done ...no. Thing is, any ROM I get is likely to trip over your 'no custom ROM' stance; for example Cyanogen.

Vibers always worked for me on custom ROM's, just waiting for that ICS update so that i can use it again.

@bdt -
I'm not officially recommending you to do anything. I'm just saying that Android 2.1, being a relatively obsolete version, may be even more problematic than a Custom ROM (2.2 or 2.3 based), when it comes to compatibility with Viber. You will obviously decide for yourself if/how you want to test this issue for workarounds, and I'd be happy to hear if any of these scenarios helped Viber work fine.

@CranialBlaze -
You'll be happy to hear that we've made some serious progress on Viber for ICS, and if all goes as planned, we're talking about 2-3 weeks till release :)

Been looking for an alternative to whatsapp as my time is almost up...counting down the days :cry:
Will give Viber a try...then need to convince friends to switch or ill be alone :D

Viber is a good little app...I like it...but most of the people I know are on Blackberry. I have only 3 Viber contacts....as opposed to almost my entire phone book that is on WhatsApp.

Oh and as good a app as I think Viber is...I think they have missed the boat in this country. Blackberry users have already taken a bit of convincing to install WhatsApp along BBM...so you can just imagine their reaction when us Android users ask them to install Viber as well when it is released for BB. They will scatch your eyes out!

I think they will adopt viber no problem, even if at the normal R2/mb, you will be paying less than 50c per minute far cheaper than the normal R2 and some change to call somebody on a different network during peak time. Just tell them about the free calls and they'll install it no problems

Voip wont work on Blackberry I think.

I am done asking people to install IM's. I have it installed already and will wait and see what happens. If people adopt it..great...if not..I am just as happy with WhatsApp.

I do however wish them well.

Correct it wont, not off wifi at least, bb hardware does not support full duplex so a 2 way voice call is not possible, best you can do is walkie talkie style.

#How bout now? Over

Beep.

It's true that there are some serious obstacles with integrating VoIP on Blackberry (and on most devices, it's near impossible to use VoIP when connected to the cellular 3G network).

At this stage, Viber's BB messenger (text messaging) system is almost ready and working great. However, Viber's VoIP (calling) system is much trickier since there are limitations in Blackberry itself that make implementing VoIP very complex, but we're working hard these days to overcome these obstacles and also include VoIP.

So - keep believing! :)
