Rugby: Sunwolves name Tanabe, Herring, Hasegawa as assistant coaches

Former Panasonic Wild Knights and Japan fullback Atsushi Tanabe will be in charge of attack.

The 38-year-old spent many a season playing alongside Tony Brown, who will be handling the same role for the Brave Blossoms in the build-up to Rugby World Cup 2019.

Last season, Tanabe became the first Japanese coach to work in Super Rugby when he was appointed backs/skills coach for the Sunwolves.

Ben Herring, who played Super Rugby for the Highlanders and Hurricanes before working as an assistant coach to the Leicester Tigers in the English Premiership and the Canada national team, will be in charge of defense.

The scrum will be the responsibility of former Suntory Sungoliath prop Shin Hasegawa, who won 40 caps for Japan.

All three were recently involved with the Brave Blossoms under Jamie Joseph, and their appointments highlight the close links that are being established between the Super Rugby franchise and the national team.

NZ Rugby boosts All Blacks' pay packets

Wellington - Captain Kieran Read is likely to become the first All Black to earn more than $1 million per season after New Zealand Rugby agreed a major boost in salaries under a collective agreement with its Players' Association.

In a move detailed on Wednesday, NZR has agreed to boost its player payment pool by $70 million from $120 million to $190 million over the next three years.

The boost recognizes increases in sponsorship and broadcast revenue, including an estimated $40 million windfall from next year's British and Irish Lions Tour, and is designed to protect New Zealand's leading players from raids by overseas clubs.

Read comes off contract next year and is poised to announce a new deal through the 2019 Rugby World Cup which could take him through the $1 million barrier.

Former captain Richie McCaw and star flyhalf Dan Carter are thought to have earned more than $1 million from salaries and endorsements but Read's seven-figure payment would be salary alone, before other earnings.

Many players will benefit as New Zealand Rugby has set aside $24.8 million for top-ups to players salaries from Super Rugby and provincial contracts, an increase of $8.9 million on the previous collective. Player revenue-sharing amounts to around 36.5 percent of NZR's income from broadcasting and sponsorship.

The Stormers will have a new Super Rugby away jersey for the 2017 season.

Kit sponsor adidas unveiled the new strip on Tuesday on Twitter, with the jersey being predominantly black with some red strips. It is a change from the 2016 edition, which featured an almost equal share of red and black.

In response to a fan’s query, adidas said on Twitter that the new jersey was “a tribute to the first @THESTORMERS team in 1999, who played in a black kit. The home jersey remains blue and white”.

The new jerseys are a stark contrast to the eye-catching shirts worn by the Sunwolves in their inaguaral season – swapping the orange and grey shirts with sublimated wolf image for primarily red and white designs. They were however, revealed in typically eccentric style.

The new shirts were designed by Manabu Mizuno of Tokyo’s Good Design Company, and the home and away jerseys each reflect a different part of the Sunwolves name.

The home shirt is a take on the classic ‘rising sun’ motif of the Japanese national flag – with the red body of the design reflecting a circle thanks to curved areas on the sleeves and the bottom of the jerseys.

The away jersey is the same basic design as the home, complete with its striking and unusual disc-based design. However with its white and black color scheme, it’s intended to represent the full moon in a night’s sky – something that’s obviously strongly associated with the ‘wolf’ part of the Sunwolves name.

Technically, the jersey once again incorporates Canterbury’s 360º Loop neckline, and also features a stronger, more durable fabric, 3D injection-molded crest, and new improved fit of the jersey thanks to 3D body mapping that has led to the creation of a different cut for forwards and backs.

NEWS: SPRINGBOK UTILITY BACK JOHAN GOOSEN DROPPED A BOMB ON HIS FRENCH CLUB AND THE NATIONAL TEAM BY ANNOUNCING HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE GAME.

Goosen, just 24, will apparently return to South Africa to enter the corporate world as a 'Commercial Director of an unnamed company.

In a scathing attack on the young player, Racing President Jacky Lorenzetti said he "reserves the right" to take appropriate legal action against Goosen and whomever advises him.

The French club boss makes no secret of the fact that he does not buy the 'retirement' claim of the player who was voted the Top 14 Player of the Year for the 2015/16 season.

"As reported by some media, Johan Goosen has failed to meet his contractual obligations [with Racing92] for several weeks," Lorenzetti said in a statement on the club website.

"I would never have spontaneously disclosed this dispute, but since it has been made public, it is important to clarify what has transpired."

What makes the announcement even more puzzling is that Goosen, who played 13 Tests for the Springboks since his debut in 2012, earlier this year extended his Racing contract till 2020.

Goosen moved to Racing in 2014, after beginning his professional career with the Cheetahs in Super Rugby.

The Racing boss claims that after they bent over backwards to accommodate Goosen earlier this year, he has found a "fantastic way" to wriggle out of his contract.

"He announced today [Friday] that he has taken the incredible decision to end his playing career, to return to South Africa for an alleged role as a Commercial Director," he said.

"Racing 92 has always supported Johan Goosen - both morally and financially.

"And even though he has lately demonstrated an unfortunate lack of responsibility towards his partners, his coaches and more broadly all the members of his club and his supporters, hopefully he will soon realize that respect for a contract is the basis of all human and professional relationships.

"Of course, the Racing 92 reserves the right to consider all appropriate judicial action - both in regards to Johan Goosen and those who advise him."

Sam Whitelock to captain the Crusaders during 2017 Super Rugby season

All Black lock Sam Whitelock will replace Kieran Read as Crusaders captain in next year's Super Rugby competition.

The appointment has been made so that Kieran Read can concentrate specifically on duties associated with being All Black captain.

With the Lions Tour to get underway in June, new coach Scott Robertson saw it as the perfect chance for Whitelock to step into the role permanently after captaining the side during Read's absence last season.

"Sam captained the team at the beginning of last season, until Kieran Read's return. But this year we want him to fully step into the role," Robertson said.

Robertson also said he wanted Read to concentrate on the All Blacks instead of juggling both captaincies.

"[We want him to] focus on just playing and enjoying himself in the Crusaders environment rather than juggling the responsibility of being both All Blacks and Crusaders captain."

Sam Whitelock said he was looking forward to the chance of being the captain and that he sees it as a huge privilege.

Kieran Read has wrist surgery, expected to return to Crusaders in April

All Black captain Kieran Read has undergone wrist surgery and is expected to join the Crusaders' Super Rugby campaign in April, two months before the British and Irish Lions tour.

Crusaders coach Scott Robertson revealed the timeline for Read's recovery on Monday before Sam Whitelock was officially unveiled as the franchise's captain for 2017.

Read, who wore a brace on his right hand during the All Blacks' end of year tour had an operation last week and is now working through the rehabilitation process.

Robertson hoped Read would be available for selection in early April so his key loose forward will miss at least five rounds of Super Rugby.

NZR open to idea of Kieran Read taking sabbatical

New Zealand Rugby are open to the idea of giving All Blacks skipper Kieran Read a Richie McCaw-esque sabbatical before the 2019 World Cup.

Read, 31, is signed contracted until the end of 2017, with negotiations ongoing for a two-year extension.

The tournament in Japan is likely to be the Crusaders loosie's last in the black jumper, as he will celebrate his 34th birthday during the Cup.

NZ Rugby chief Steve Tew said the union was open to giving the 97-cap Read a sabbatical in 2018 to refresh before a final tilt at the Webb Ellis.

If granted, the sabbatical would imitate former captain McCaw's six-month break from the game at the beginning of 2013.
