Supermarket prices 'soaring'

What really amused me were the comments. Looks like Joe Public is at last starting to realise that a retailer the size of Pick 'n Pay dictates to it's suppliers what price it will pay for their products - not as they have been claiming the other way around.
 
Trevor Manuel is contributing to the increase in petrol price too. Expect more price hikes.

It sounds like a charade, especially with all the little stickers in-store claiming R1 off this and that.

I don't know P'nP's stance now, but they always used to be very much on the consumers' side. I remember one of the hypermarkets that had a petrol station always used to offer their petrol at a reduced rates, after price increases.
 
Those days are long, long gone ..... I think PnP are one of the greediest culprits these days.

PnP is only on PnP's side. Always has been and always will be.

The perception that it is on the consumers' side is marketing.
 
PnP has long ago lost my respect. Have not even been into one in over 3 months.
 
Not only are the prices soaring, but I would recommend everyone to check the price of any product you are paying for at the till and compare them to the advertised price.

Over this past weekend with four different items - two at Builders Warehouse - Somerset West and two at PnP - Somerset West the retailers tried to charge prices up to 90% more than what was advertised. In all cases I just got a sorry excuse for their error.

This has happened to me numerous times this year and especially with PnP I have noticed the following:

PnP tend to sell an expensive and a cheaper product right next to each other (in my case over the weekend it was an easter bunny pack for kids). The cheaper product is obviously sold out quicker than the more expensive product. Once PnP have sold out the cheaper product the price label is moved to the more expensive product.

When you complain at the till the first reaction from PnP is - Sorry the price label is for a different item. Well we let them have it. In a very loud voice to make sure other shoppers hear us we accused them of false advertising and that we would take this issue further. In no more than a few seconds we had the full amount refunded.

Makes one think !!!!!

If price on shelf is different to till price, PnP will give you that item for free.
You should have tried that. Last year I had that issue come up, got a whole Norwegian Salmon for free that way after the prices did not match up.

Clicks sold it for R52.00 in Dec, its normally R30.00... Saturday I saw it for R25.00, I bought 4!!!
 
You can save a lot by getting a bidet or one of these fancy J-toilets for your house :).
 
Well, SPAR did the "price rings up different to the advertised price" thing today. When I queried it, the customer at the till next to me overheard - and noticed the same thing with her items (and a different product).

SHAME on you, SPAR.
 
Game does the same too.

Went to game shopping, then one item came up more expensive. So i queried it and they took me to another location of the product and showed me the price there. So I took them to where I'd pick up the item and showed him there. The still refused to sell it to me at the marked price. I just had enough of game (dont get me started...) and just left the shop as it, leaving the items behind for them to got and repack.

PnP has never been bad to me though. Had to exchange goods - no issue at all. They are generally cheaper and have almost anything you could want. Throw in the Healthy Foods Savings and PnP is hard to beat.

[Of course, I'm referring to the big PnPs, I avoid the small PnPs]
