I have the Sony, bought yesterday and I am extremely impressed with it's ability. 16 MP, 30x optical, very good HD video with minimal to no stutter during sweeping shots.

I don't think you will go wrong with the Sony, it is quite a bit better than anything else in it's class. I replaced a camera and video camera with it.

If the status quo of a few years back still holds, you'll probably want to at least investigate the comparable Panasonic Lumix models as well.

The last superzooms they released were the FZ45 & FZ100

...and? Still as good as their forebears? I'm out of touch what with my budget being non-existent at present, which is why I'm asking.

No idea, maybe see if they got some reviews on dpreview etc.

Yes, the hx100v. Haven't charged it yet. Will give some feedback, as soon as I get a chance to play with it.

Look for the superzoom that can go the widest. What I always found with the 2 I owned, was that they could never go wide enough. Zoom was never the issue... I don't know what the latest and greatest bridge cameras are, but that is one of the things I would look at.

If you going DSLR later OP, why not go for it now? I got the FZ38 Lumix, and feel an upgrade to DSLR is now necessary, this after only 15 months.

Replaced video and cam with single device. Superzoom can be simple point and shoot when necessary, and plenty of manual overides if needed. Photography still complicated to me. The Hx100 has decent enough images , for my untrained eye. A little bulky, but probably par for course, what with bigger lenses, sensors etc. Enjoying it so far.
