Just wondering, with all the big corporates that restrict their employees net access so much that they cannot even access google.com, are there any MyWireless users out that take their modems to work to overcome this problem of no net access? I know I would if I was in that predicament. [:)]

I contract out, and when i only MENTIONED that i MIGHT bring my modem to work for unrestricted access the IT ops manager flipped!

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

They would, because you'll be connecting their internal (secure) network to the internet (unsecure network) without their control and that's how virii/worms get inside a network. It's not worth the risk, rather get a laptop or PC that's not connected to the internal network if you plan to do something like that.

No dude, I installed a firewall on a pc supplied by my boss (which is not their property) and the IT ops manager ***ked me out... wtf?

they officially give me access to 2 sites for research purposes... hell, it took me 15 minutes to old-school hack their SQUID for almost full internet access. The projects I'm working on atm (worth over 90 million) I took ideas off the internet and added my own... without which I would probably be stuck at one single problem still.

They suck ass.... virii my ass, I havent been infected with anything since 1997

Well, simple - just do nothing till the end of the week, then plan on Monday morning to try your sentech modem out without letting anyone know. You may have to keep it concealed in your draw or bag (with a cable trailing to it :) ), but it's worth a try.

Failing that, do what I've done and go Freelance ! (or should that be a Freeluncher ?)

Wish I could, my office is located towards the inner side of the building (imagine a U shape, my office is towards the middle of the U)

My modem only picks up signal on the opposite end of the hall/office and I'm not willing to mess with the Cellular department's PC to route traffic to mine (even if I have their manager agree to it)

Because good old IT Ops would flip out and probably *** in his panty

Ah c'mon !

Sounds like you want to be the victim.

Well, here it is in a crazy idea nutshell.

1. Get a laptop
2. Get wireless networking gear that can get from your parking space at the office (the new laptop) to your desk. (your cruddy computer)
3. Install MyWireless on the laptop in your car.

I have used my modem at work plenty of times, when our international bandwidth was overcommitted with the entire company surfing hotmail.com etc. Typically download kernel updates, or the latest versions of gcc or other software that I use in day-to-day programming.

I'm paranoid though, so I actually have a second Sparc/Linux machine on my desk that firewalls my main desktop from the Sentech connection and the rest of the company.

Nowadays though, I just leave the modem at home, and via ADSL abuse the Sentech modem's bandwidth from work, since our local bandwidth is almost always undercommitted.

Sweet idea TheRodent.

Anyway, re: The laptop, I recently bought a house so I have to fix the thing up before May or else I start losing some serious cash (losing out already)

Even if I had a laptop, how would I keep it powered? Maybe I should just leave it in the office next door then... don't think they'll bitch about it because it's not on their network and just using some power... hmmmmmm

Any laptop recommondations? I want to at least run unreal 2004 smoothly on it... (maybe then sell my home pc)

Actually virii is the correct term for many viruses... like you call alot of geese, a flock (right?) or a gaggle or something

like, a litter of puppies (i'm sure it's litter! [:D])

noone, I am also one of those people that hasn't been infected since 1997.

It's wierd... some people just seem to have an affinity for attracting virii... I hardly ever get anything, but I keep Norton Antivirus on just in case.

My last virus recieved via a 1.44mb floppy disk was in 1998.

Actually in computer terms it's supposed to be virii.

Strange thing, in animals: one mouse, many mice
in computers: one mouse, many mouses...

Also, on tv: programmes
on computer: programs.

Stupid americans

To help you on your search for a decent performance laptop noone, try this link:
http://www.itweb.co.za/office/dell/0403050737.htm

The Dell Inspiron 9100 has the Mobility 9700 graphics chip, and I have used several Dell notebooks - all have been of really good build quality and the tech/hardware support is excellent.

Hope it helps - and no I don't work for Dell [:D]

Noone : The solution to your problem, I can't promise it will work, but its rather cheap and practical, thought up the idea when I wanted mywireless, but was not in coverage, but a neighbor a few km's away did have coverage.
If it works, get back to us.
use your existing Network cable from the mywireless modem, attach an Ethernet bridge onto that, An Ethernet bridge is basically a device that plugs into a network device, and allows it to communicate with wi-fi networks, set up a wireless card in your pc, leave modem at working end of office in someones desk...
setup PPPOE, and away you go!!
