A number of electronic devices in my office, including our rather large printer/fax/copier, one desktop pc, router have "blown" twice in the last two weeks. The first time it happened it was during the night when nobody was around, but with this last one that happened I was around to hear what happened - there was an audible buzzing that began emanating from the room where the printer was and then two loud popping sounds, accompanied by a faint burning smell
A guy in my office building sells "UPS" systems which he says will protect our devices, although I'm highly skeptical as his UPS systems are Inverex-type modified square wave inverters and 2x102Ah batteries. My understanding is that this type of system merely offers backup power and not surge protection or line conditioning.
My questions are: what do I need to protect my devices? What kind of surge was likely to be the culprit here at my office? Will a double conversion online UPS offer protection against what's happening here, or do I need some kind of distribution board connected surge protection system?
