Hi Guys,

I just want to know how important you would rate a surge protector for your ADSL modem? If one lives anywhere in the Johannesburg/Pretoria area, it is just common sense to unplug everything when a thunderstorm is approaching.

Would this still be a necessity even during sunny spells?

Thanks.

Very important. Same as old dialup modems. Rather save than sorry. Just buy the more expensive commercial units, not flea market. A few guys lost their modems on this forum in the last thundery weather week, I noticed.

For the line or the power supply? Most of them are pretty useless anyway - Household insurance is a better bet.

I learnt the hard way...my Netgear router was taken out by lightning :(

Veritech, it is very important. During the day i am not at home, but my little bsd box sits and keeps my adsl active because i use dyndns to run a small mail server for my self and some friends and family. If lightning is to hit during the day i am screwed no one to plug out all the stuff! I lost my modem and my main PC's mobo just last month, with the first strike, due to high dust content in the air brought about by no rain it was a massive one. I know nothing stops a direct hit but i am going to run a 240va ups for the gateway and my modem/switch/wireless router very soon just to help with the spikes and to keep my mail server going for a while. I am also running a "plug into wall socket" surge protector for my modem. And depending on your insurance is also not good they hike up your monthly premiums if you claim to much especially for silly sub R500 items! Trust me I know!

Well my line sparked when thunder struck, the modem just reset and it was working again.

Hi Everybody,

Thanx for the response.

I have decided that it would be best to follow the saying that goes 'rather be safe than sorry' in this case and get one somewhere.
