Hi All
Hoping someone has some insight on this.
We got married and we were issued a document by the marriage officer that contains our details/date etc...all handwritten.
I was under the impression that this was our marriage certificate but after speaking to the marriage officer, apparently it's not.
He advised that he did his part by registering at Home Affairs and that we actually need to go there to get the actual marriage certificate.
Is this correct?
The next thing is that my wife wants to have her surname changed to mine - What are the requirements for this?
Can this be done online?
According to this site: http://www.dha.gov.za/index.php/amendments
Assuming a different surname (Section 26 of Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1992)
A woman may assume her husband's surname, or revert to her maiden surname or a prior surname she legally bore, and since 1997 a woman may also join her surname with that of her husband's as a double-barreled surname.
No application to the Department of Home Affairs is necessary in these instances, but to enable the Department to update the Population Register, women should notify the Department of such changes in writing.
Thanks
