Hi,

I have set the surround sound option on the hd-pvr settings to Auto, which reduced my sound volume somewhat.

A friend of mine told me to rather change it to Manual and control the surround sound option via the Alt+ Language menu on the remote, apparently it gives him better sound.

Just wondering if i can get some opinions on what is the best way to set it up.

Thank you
P

I've got it set to manual, as on auto everytime you go to a channel that has it, it will set it too 5.1 and the volume on 2 channels is much lower.

Mine's set on Auto and my volume does not drop between channels, just see the receiver change to 2+ etc.
I keep the volume on the decoder at full all the time, only use the amp for volume control.

Also remember that Dolby Digital output on the HD PVR is only supported by the Coaxial and Optical outputs and NOT by HDMI. No idea why, but true

Really? Well that's stupid. :P How do you tell a reciever to use HDMI and Optical audio? Is it a feature on them?

All you do is take the HDMI directly from the decoder to the TV , and run an optical cable to the receiver. Otherwise i do know that some receivers will allow you to use HDMI pass through along with optical audio. But this is pointless.

Which PVR are you referring to? According to the user guide for the HD PVR2:

Option A : Digital audio via HDMI
o Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI input on the Home Theatre System and to the
HDMI connector (#6) on the HD PVR.
o Connect a second HDMI cable from the Home Theatre HDMI output, to the HD TV
HDMI input.
Option B : Digital audio via Optical or Coaxial connectors
o Connect a S/PDIF optical cable from the digital audio connector (#2) on the HD PVR
to the Home Theatre’s optical input.
o Alternatively, connect a single phono-cable from the coaxial connector (#3) on the HD
PVR to the Home Theatre’s coaxial input.
o Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI input on the HD TV and to the HDMI connector
(#6) on the HD PVR.

Don't see anything about requiring Optical or Coax audio for Dolby.

I run my audio to my AMP via the optic, and the video passes through on th HDMI. My amp can allow for it....

This was the case with the original HDPVR software. Surround sound on HDMI has been available for about 2 years now

Don't you work for MC or UEC? The HD-PVR was only released about two years ago around the 2008 Olympics.

Nope I dont. It was released Aug 2008, I seem to remember this being fixed fairly soon, maybe it was only early 2009 though.
The problem though is that the HDPVRs came with a booklet which said HDMI did not support SS audio long after it was fixed

So on my May '09 purchased HD-PVR with latest firmware, it should support it through HDMI?

^^ what he said?

(My LNB was upgraded earlier this month, and the installer also said surround sound only works over optical)

Yup, if you have the latest software then HDMI supports surround sound. The purchase date of the HDPVR doesn't matter its the software version.
Pace 4 tuner should be on 32/2 (or a later one if you have requested it)
UEC 4 tuner on 23/2 or 18/2
