Racially mixed marriages are still controversial. About 61 percent of whites, 50 percent of Indians, 43 percent of Africans and 38 percent of coloureds believed that races shouldn't mix.

I am in a racially mixed marriage myself so this kind of hits close to home .

No surprise that us coloureds being a product of the great racial blender in the sky have no problems with it ... the more the merrier I say ... we will all be brown in S.A one day anyway .

Typical of a South African reporter to make it a Racial issue, and not a cultural. Jewish, Muslim and other communities dont support marriage outside of the religion... so what does that make it?

Each kind on his own, that goes with culture, race religion and everything else in life! You never know what the mixed breeds would bring, look at dogs, the old unfavorable genes could become the prominent creating problems. Then I know PPL in mixes marriages where the brood are fine, others I see walking in town with pigment problems! So the choice is each persons own and that does not mean everyone must do it! I have no problems with your situation and many others for that matter. So have no particular stance on this except it will not be for me personally! It would be my kids own choice, will see if that ever happens!

Oh it must be the Southern sun then, Hope I will live to see the outcome. So after 2000 + years the PPl in the Middle East e.g. Egypt have changed pigment? A lot of c@rp if you ask me. Evolution would take much longer, if ever, if that is what you are hinting at! an by then UV will play the dominant role. Maybe the races would all be purple then; unless aliens landed by then and all will become green!

Not quite turn a darker shade. Skin colour is a function of genes. Blacks, whites, Asians & others all have different genes for skin colour. The gene that best supports your ability to survive in your environment is the one that gets naturally selected and possibly passed on to your offspring.

Say for example: It's 50 000 years ago in Africa. A child is born to parents with dark skin. A mutation has occurred in the child's genes and its skin colour is very pale compared to its parents'. This may lead to the child's survivability decreasing (due to harsh African sun) and thus be an unfavourable mutation. The child will have a lower chance of passing this mutated gene along and so the gene is naturally selected against.

So does evolution work (in my extremely simplified view).

This was only determined or discovered in end 2005. So yes nobody not even the scientists are sure. Only Wiki as it was developed by Experts (Internet scientists)!

Actually gene diversity has been the key to human advancement (as with every other species) - keeping within a small, specific gene pool is more likely to lead to phenotypic displays (and ill-effects) of recessive genotypes. We all know what inbreeding's results are, for instance.

Yeah - I hear ya - I am in the 61%... I think attraction within your same race is most likely the norm (the first people your respect and love are the same colour as you, most likely... which I guess explains why mixed-race children are the most open to this - at 38%)

Well apart from the implicit praise of eugenics, the example used is actually wrong: it is well-know fact that purebred dogs are more susceptible to gene-based illness.

Really? What show was that? I think with people like Stern, the topics may be "offensive" to some, but they keep it above the racial slur level.
