Durban - Police are investigating the hijacking of suspended provincial police Commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni’s son in Glen Anil on Monday night.
Two independent police sources confirmed that Ngobeni’s son was held at gunpoint and forced out of his vehicle as he was exiting their Cypress Drive property.
Marshall Security spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said that reaction officers had responded to a report of the hijacking after 18:00.
“Reports from the scene indicate that two men, armed with pistols, approached a vehicle as it was exiting a premises. [Gunmen] ordered the driver to get out of the Volkswagen Polo GTI before fleeing [in the stolen car] down toward Chris Hani Road,” he said.
“The vehicle was fitted with a tracking device, monitored by BidTrack. A signal was found in the Inanda area and Marshall Security's special operations team were called in to assist.
Fraud investigation
After an extensive tracking period, the vehicle was found abandoned off a main road in the area. The suspects remain at large,” Van Reenen added.
He said the car was handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation.
Police spokespersons did not respond to questions by the time of publishing.
Ngobeni referred a request for comment on the matter to her husband, who in turn deferred the request to police.
Ngobeni has been suspended since May, related to her links to Durban businessman Thoshan Panday and his associates.
They reportedly paid nearly R20 000 for her husband Brigadier Lucas Ngobeni's birthday party in 2010.
The bash, thrown by Panday, came at a time when he was a suspect in a fraud investigation.
The National Prosecuting Authority declined to prosecute her.
She has challenged an inquiry into her fitness to hold office, seeking relief from the courts.
