For all of you fish and seafood eaters out there - check out SASSI, the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative .

Many of the fish that we eat today are coming under increasing pressure and if continued strain is put on these populations, they may not be around much longer for us to enjoy.

You can make a big difference as a consumer by checking whether the fish you are thinking of buying is a sustainable species. SASSI's consumer species list tells you about which seafood species are legal and more sustainable choices from South African seafood populations. Green species are the best choices as they can handle current fishing pressure better. Orange species should be considered with caution as they are either over-exploited, or from problematic fisheries. Red species are illegal to sell in South Africa, and some of them are specially protected.

Alternatively, you can SMS the name of the fish to 0794998795 and a reply will be sent to you indicating its status.
 
Any idea what kind of tuna is used for our sushi? I know that the bluefin tuna harvested by the Japs for their sushi is under severe pressure. I shudder to think what the demand created by the recent SA sushi fad is doing to salmon and tuna fish stocks.

Very few people and restaurants are even aware of the SASSI list. I know that PnP and Woolies are actively striving to create an awareness among it's customers.

It pisses me off more that ignorant people still support crayfish and perlemoen poachers.

What I always do if I'm wanting sushi is to ask the waiter what exact kind of fish is used. Invariably he/she won't know and then I simply request that they go and find out from the chef/owner. From there, it's a quick SMS to decide whether or not to order.

There's a printable reference card on the site I think, folds into a CC size piece of paper that fits in your wallet. PnP were also handing them out at one stage.

The waiters never know, Ocean Basket in Plumstead stopped serving salmon and they couldn't tell me why.
 
Funny how shops want to create awareness while stocking as much as possible.

O this is a species that is going to die out in 10 years, how many would like? O while your eating that tonight i would like you to check out that what your eating is not a sustainable species, please come again for unsustainable species which we stock at all times.

Unreal. If people actually gave a crap they would stop selling it all together.

The problem of overfishing does not lie with retailers as much as it lies with the suppliers and fisheries. If retailers stopped stocking, then people would just get it from somewhere else.
 
Without retailers buying the stock there would not need to fish as you have no market to sell to.

So in theory if they gave a F they would not stock the item, but they don't really care. As much awareness as they try and bring to their unsustainable stock they carry. Much like the end user who eats his unsustainable fish does not care.

I agree. But as consumers we can make a difference too. The retailers will not stock what people don't want to buy.
 
The people in this country could not give a flying f. If it's finished they will just blame apartheid and start abusing something else.

The retailers should be more pro-active simple as that, I do not think we are the only nation that don't care in the world. Doubt too many blacks who still blame aparteid eat those kinds of fish.

This may sound bad it is not meant bad, but i go to many places to eat and i see black people at all the meat places but rarely do a i see a couple/group of black people chomping on sushi and the like. So i cannot see where the aparteid comes into fish eating.

A lot of people couldn't care less about things like raping the ocean. The thing is, we can't put all the blame on the retailer, while continuing with our own (bad) consumption habits. A lot of the time as a consumer, you can make a difference just by spending some time finding out about the products you buy.
 
Why should we as consumers have to go and research everything we buy when retailers know every product inside out?

I seriously do not want to go and research every item i buy to see if i should stop buying. Stop giving me the choice to buy these items and i will not buy them.

So you don't want to use your brain, but rather be a mindless sheep who buys whatever's there to buy? Ok...
 
My brain? What does that have to do with my monthly goods?

I buy what i see, i don't eat anything but hake, pizza, pasta veggies and fruit so i would not need to go and research much as everything i eat one would not think it would be a problem but i am sure not everyone who eats stuff they see wants to research it and see if it is a problem.

If it is a problem they should make it illegal to sell. My brains works well when i am not hung over and to me if something is endangered make it illegal. Do you think ivory for instance was left up to the world's population to stop buying it? No they made it illegal to sell and killed the market.

Now that is using your brain, anyone with even one brain cell will tell you that expecting the world to research and stop eating goods on shelves is not going to happen. realistically most people don't give a crap and will destroy the stock so make it illegal and kill the market.

Yes I do, at least the things that matter. Researching before purchasing isn't limited to audiovisual and PCs.

I don't buy into the advertising hype, I do my own research.
