Im a little bit confused, I'll be studying at unisa soon(2nd semester) and would like to know how to major in both computer science and information systems. Do i choose the Bsc general degree and then choose my modules from both CS and IS?

You cannot do that anymore. You need to decide one of the two, the general BSc is too generic.

Decide what is more important for you and rather focus on that. CS has the advantage if your young and really want to focus heavily on development. IS on the other hand is great if you want to touch on development but rather focus on the system design, management principles and dealing with non-technical peers. If your older like me, mid 30s, then IS is much better suited.

Personally I would say if your in doubt to what you want to do, already have a job and will be studying part time then IS is the safer option. Was actually having that discussion with somebody today. I also convinced my younger brother to go IS as he is starting next month but is already employed and rather wants a qualification that gives him more room in his career (he is in the Australian army).

It all comes down to what do you enjoy the most?

if your strength lies in development and you love to do it, then why not do CS?

like cb said IS is less technical, more focussed on management, red tape, design, and management. CS is more focussed on development, algorithms, software design and engineering (this is also covered in IS so don't worry)

Put it this way, in UCT, if you do CS you will be developing in Unix environments, if you did IS, you would be working under a Windows .NET environment.

Either degree is tops imho, in terms of paygrade you might see bigger returns if u studied IS than CS, but the gap is getting ever so closer, and sometimes negligable...

Yes that's how it works with the new BSc degree. You can focus on one major or choose modules from two to have a degree in both. Conveniently the modules required for a BSc (Computer Science and Information Systems) are in the my Modules @ Unisa pdf found here.

When setting up your own curriculum. then the following are the
compulsory modules for a major subject. Please note that you must include
all the prerequisites and co-requisites for these modules in your curriculum.
Both Computer Science and Information Systems may be taken as major
subjects, provided that a module does not count as credit in both majors.
COMPUTER SCIENCE
NQF Level 5: COS1501, 1511, 1512, 1521
NQF Level 6: COS2601, 2611, 2614, 2621 and at least ONE of COS2626,
2633, 2661
NQF Level 7: COS3701, 3711, 3721 and at least TWO of APM3711,
COS3751, COS3761
INFORMATION SYSTEMS
NQF Level 5: INF1505, 1520, 1511
NQF Level 6: ICT2621, ICT2622, INF2611, COS2626
NQF Level 7: INF3703, 3705 3707, 3708, 3720.

Note that the curriculum for this BSC degree consists of:

1)THIRTY MODULES (make sure you take enough)
2) Not more than EIGHT of the thirty modules may be on the first level (NQF level 5).
3)At least TEN modules must be on third level (NQF level 7).
