Another new Indian-sourced Suzuki is on it’s way to SA, based on the Ertiga.

Suzuki XL6 coming to South Africa to rival Honda’s BR-V

Having firmly entrenched its position as South Africa’s third biggest car company, Suzuki is on a roll, and it’s largely thanks to its extensive range of affordable products from Maruti Suzuki in India.

That line-up is set to expand even further in 2023, with the launch of the new Grand Vitara, Fronx and the highly-anticipated Jimny 5-Door, but that’s not all…

Suzuki also has a compact six-seat crossover called the XL6 in the pipeline and it’s set to do battle with the Honda BR-V, which pretty much has that niche to itself at the moment. Local specifications, of course, will only be revealed closer to launch, but a local representative has told IOL that it will be with us soon.

The Suzuki XL6 is based around the bodyshell of the Ertiga MPV that’s already sold in South Africa, but it has been transformed into a crossover with its raised ride height and unique design package that includes protective body cladding and a completely unique front end with a chrome grille. The vehicle is also fitted with two-tone machine-finished 16-inch alloy wheels.

Providing power is a 1.5-litre K15C normally aspirated mild hybrid engine that produces 76kW and 137Nm. All versions are front-driven, through either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Curiously, the cabin seats six, rather than seven, occupants, and that because instead of the usual second-row bench seat, the XL6 has a pair of individual ‘Captain’s chairs’.

Maruti Baleno, Ertiga & XL6 get new connectivity features - Team-BHP

Maruti Suzuki (India) has upgraded the infotainment system in the Baleno, Ertiga and XL6 with new connectivity features.

The Smart Play Pro and Pro+ infotainment systems in these cars now offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The Baleno’s head-up display now integrates Turn-by-Turn navigation.

Turn-by-Turn navigation is also available on the speedometer MID of the Baleno, Ertiga and XL6. Besides this, the Ertiga and XL6 get the ‘Surround Sense’ Arkamys audio system.

These features will be available via an Over-the-Air (OTA) update. Customers can install these updates via their smartphones or download them from Maruti Suzuki’s website.

Suzuki XL6 (2023) Price & Specs

The Suzuki XL6 has arrived in South Africa, offering a mix of crossover styling and MPV practicality. Check out local pricing for the Japanese firm’s 3-row newcomer…

The Suzuki XL6 has made local landfall in South Africa, touching down as the latest addition to the Japanese firm’s burgeoning passenger-vehicle range and offering seating for 6 as standard.

Arriving hot on the heels of the new Fronx, the 3-row XL6 has been around in other markets for a few years now. Based on the 7-seater Ertiga, it launched in India – where it is produced – in 2019, before receiving a refresh in 2022. It’s the latter, updated version that has now launched locally.

How much does the Suzuki XL6 cost in South Africa?

Suzuki XL6 1.5 GL MT – R326 900

Suzuki XL6 1.5 GL AT – R345 900

Suzuki XL6 1.5 GLX MT – R341 900

Suzuki XL6 1.5 GLX AT – R360 900

The above prices include a 5-year/200 000 km (promotional) warranty and a 4-year/60 000 km service plan.

Honestly 77kw and 138nm is far too little for a 6 seater BR-V competitor.
I mean vs 89kw and 145nm with the deal breaking CVT. Honda all the way. Even at R100k more.

Imagine spending R400k on a Grand Vitara just top be left in the dust by a R200k Baleno due to the weight advantage. Yikes.

I really hate Chinese cars But at this point I am starting to think I would pick one over a Suzuki. I am actually angry at Suzuki, I feel personally insulted.

Pricing: Suzuki XL6 lands in South Africa as compact seven-seater with SUV vibes

Hot on the heels of the recently launched Fronx, Suzuki has launched yet another crossover in Mzansi: meet the XL6.

But what is it? Set to rival the Honda BR-V, the Suzuki XL6 is based on the Ertiga seven-seat MPV, but boasts unique design elements that make it appear more SUV-like.

These include a unique hexagonal grille in chrome as well as black wheel arch cladding and standard 15-inch machine polished alloy wheels.

Power comes from the familiar 1.5-litre K15B normally aspirated petrol engine, with 77kW and 138Nm on tap, and buyers can choose from the usual gearbox menu of five-speed manual or four-speed auto.

So how much? With the 1.5 GL priced at R326,900 in manual guise and R345,900 as an auto, and the GLX commanding R341,900 and R360,900 respectively, it effectively takes off where the Ertiga ends. The latter, which doesn’t have a GLX variant, is priced from R265,900 to R325,900, for the record.

Suzuki XL6 Pricing (August 2023)

1.5 GL 5-spd manual - R326 900

1.5 GL 4-spd auto - R345 900

1.5 GLX 5-spd manual - R341 900

1.5 GLX 4-spd auto - R360 900
