Soccer supremo Danny Jordaan has apologised to the cities that built stadiums for the soccer World Cup and admitted not enough thought had gone into their planning to ensure they would be financially viable.

As bad as these white elephants are. They did help allot of unemployed people feed their families. So it wasn't a big loss after all. We just need to find a way of making them work. They are awesome stadiums. We either need to adopt a new sport to fill them or create new teams to be hosted there and they will grow.

Maybe ...if more thought had been put into it... those unemployed people would still be employed and able to feed their families
 
Typical SA leadership behaviour. Will do almost anything for the sake of short-term reward and instant gratification.

Nope. Many stadiums were built in areas where people can't afford bread, let alone a ticket to a sporting event. Filling the stadiums only contributes to their eventual breakdown, unless you fill them with paying patrons. They are doomed. Might as well knock them down & redistribute the materials to the surrounding settlements. It'll be cheaper.

This was all abundantly clear from the get-go, but the SA government want to go around pretending we're a first-world country with bottomless pockets. We aren't. ****'s gonna start getting real...

Why do so many South Africans think we're the only country with incompetent public officials who can't manage money :o
 
Guys we hosted one of the biggest sporting events on the planet, sure there are some white elephants but looking back it was nothing short of Fking spectacular.

It put us on the map, showed the world we can do something on this scale.

All they need to do now is give these stadiums to our local soccer teams. I am not worried about this at all. This country will be remembered for holding one of the best worlds cup in the history of the world cup :D. All i can say is bloody well done and sure we wasted some money but so what. At least we had something nice before turning into zim :D

Not arguing the success of the SWC.

The local teams cannot afford the upkeep of the marginal stadiums. The running costs are exorbitant.
 
A few comments, what would people have prefered? Not having the World Cup? Also, have any of you guys been to an event at a World Cup stadium since the end of the World Cup. Because the notion that they aren't hosting events is false.

So subsidize it then, rather have teams playing on it than it sitting doing nothing. Put some money into it and who knows 3 years from now they may be full and making a profit.

Me. NMB Stadium. Soccer, Rugby, Music concerts attended. Even had work functions (plural) at the stadium.

Subsidise? With what funds? As it is we RATEPAYERS are paying extra to foot the bill for the NMB staium and this has led to the Metro having to cut back on its Capex infrastructure programme this year and probably next year as well. They are technically bankrupt.

But what rates are being paid and to whom?

The Stadiums can be given to clubs for free. Meaning all costs the government wants to make is removed. Property tax, rent and what not. Have the club take care of the grounds and pay their own electricity bill.

PE's situation is a bit dodgy because of Stephan Pretorius. He's both the head of stadium management and the CEO of the Southern Kings. That's why the EPRU pay only R50 000 per match and he wanted to charge Bay United R200 000 per match. Bay United have left which leaves fewer events.
