Swimming pool filtration

I use Blu52.

My pool has only ever gone green for 2 reasons, since I started using it 4 years ago:

1) My oak tree dumps a crudload of yellow pollen in spring. Yellow + blue = green.
2) I haven't bought more blu52 and it's 3 weeks since i last dosed it

I've ONCE had to do some unusual maintenance - which was to clean out the filter sand, and use some metal remover.

Interesting. Blue 52 didn't work for me. I have also heard its bad for the water. Apparently locks the water in, so any additional chemicals you may need to add have zero effect. Can't say how true this is.

Hmm. "locks water in"? I dunno hey.
The HTH metal remover worked fine. So do the HTH clear blue blocks when I put them in to polish the water.
Also, couldn't get Blu52 for the last month - so put in some clear4weeks instead, it also worked fine.

I dunno hey, that's what someone told me, shrug, I don't know what to believe these days :p

I am very suspicious of those 2 reports, only 2 reports posted a day apart ? my spidy senses are tingling. One user has only ever reported once (positive pool) other one 3 times (2 positives on pool/1 negative on food).

Well spotted, also suspect.

Further resurrection! I am looking to get one of these Dolphin Ozonaters. Its between this and a cheaper option, the chlor-less, about R4000 cheaper but apparently crap?

I don't know who or what to believe. Anyone?

Hi

I know this is several years later but I thought I would weigh in.

I am busy working on a few different water treatment systems for various applications so I have done a lot of research into this.

Before getting involved in this project, I bought and fitted a Chlor-less Ionizer at the recommendation of a pool repair guy. I had just moved house and the new pool had a broken chlorinator which I wanted a quote to replace.

I drank the cool-aid and went with the ionizer. Absolutely no regrets. Water is clean and clear and virtually no chlorine. I am on about a cup every 2-3 weeks in summer and a cup every 4-6 weeks in winter.
Absolutely the best thing (along with my Kreepy Krauly Dominator) that I have spent money on for my pool.
You feel great when you climb out. the water is soft and non abrasive. you can backwash onto grass and plants and they love it. normally, backwash water has too much chlorine in it and kills grass.

I replace my electrodes more than is suggested but I also run my pump more than is suggested, in order to keep the temperature up (solar panels). Electrodes are about R250 a set and can last between 6-12 months, obviously dependent on use and maintenance.

I have recommended and helped install (because its pretty easy) on about 6 pools now and they all work well except for 1. but this is a matter of mindset. if the water starts to turn he likes to "shock" the pool which completely messes up the balance and pH of the pool. The System requires about 5-10 minutes of maintenance every 2 weeks (clean baskets, backwash, swap over the banana clips to reverse the polarity of the electrodes and wipe off any build up on the electrodes) and my friend finds this too strenuous and would rather drop a grand or 2 on chemicals at the pool shop. cant help everyone.

I have not used the Dolphin one, but I have heard it is good, but a bit pricier.

I am developing my own system, and will be competing with these guys, but I would not have considered this had I not tried this product out personally for the last 3 years and been so impressed.

People who say its "crap" are either not following the correct usage and little bit of maintenance (or dumping loads of iron-rich borehole water into their pools without removing the iron) or they are pool guys/shops who don't like it because its not good for business. Less sales in maintenance and chemicals.

Also years too late, but is it possible to tell how effective HTH metal remover is? Also, can the treated water be used in my garden also, or will the lawn and plants not like it?
