Forget about the symptoms for catching this horrible virus, take a look at the economic reaction to the virus!

- Asian investors are selling airline stocks
- Gold is being bought up like candy because suddenly other investments are in danger (of catching the flu?).
- Drug manufacturing companies are also a sudden safe-haven.
- Oil barons fear a lack of demand because of the drop in flights, so the oil price drops.

If you read the articles, and follow through, the financial crisis that was beginning to look like it had hit the bottom of the trough will suddenly start to nosedive again.

Incredible world this.

Real Symptoms:
The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Great - the symptoms are just right for everyone with a snotty nose to panic. Considering I am always displaying two or more of those symptoms (what with two kids in kindergarten...), I could have it and never know.

And, what is more worrying, is I am a pig....

CNN had a report that said the virus *could* (ie - it may not) spread around for 18-24 months if it becomes a pandemic. Leading to no travel, closed businesses etc.
What is happening in SA in that time period?

/me dons tin foil hat and awaits the heated debate....

Oh - I am sure the teams will play - easy enough to quarantine a few 100 people for a week or two.
Tourists though are another problem.
 
A few weeks ago I had a sudden onset of fever, my body was very weak and almost couldn't do anything, then 2 days later I had diarrhoea, I didn't go to the doctor though, I self-medicated myself back to health, could this have been swine fever?
 
So if it is such a virulent strain, then am I correct in assuming that populations with high percentage of HIV people would be hardest hit?

I'm just pissing in the wind here..

Nothing like a bout of swine flu to **** up the economy a bit more. This is really starting to get interesting. The usual sensationalist ****ers are going on about how the same viral strain killed 100 million people a few years ago and how there are no vaccines. Pig ****. No vaccine for a global epidemic threat that was discovered nearly a century ago? Sure. Usually when something like this happens the world is trying to reassure the rest of the world it's actually under control. This time, that is not the case. This is a scare. I'm not saying it's not true, but its immense publicity is being used to create spikes in the world economic trend. Because when some are going down, others are going up. Anil Ambani lost most of his $ 60 billion fortune in twelve months whereas Michael Bloomberg gained 30% of his $ 16 billion in the same recession period. And to think no one but conspiracy geeks can understand the possibility of the whole thing being orchestrated. Why? Someone always benefits. Always.
 
My shares seem to do being alright ... 19% growth in 7 months

Pearls Before Republican Swine

The Republicans are in imminent danger of having another Katrina-disaster, in this case in the form of a swine flu epidemic and its effect on the economy. The swine flu has already killed over 100 people in Mexico and has spread to the US, causing the closing of schools and other public facilities in US cities. And the AP reports today that “World stock markets fell Monday as investors worried that a deadly outbreak of swine flu in Mexico could go global and derail any global economic recovery.”

So what does this have to do with the Republicans? Let me count the ways…

First, the Republicans in the Senate are still blocking Obama’s cabinet appointment of Kathleen Sebelius to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in a cheap political play to their base because of Sebelius’ support for reproductive rights. In the meantime, the department is being run temporarily by a Bush appointee who spent most of his career working as an accountant (I’m sure he’ll do a “heckuva job”). Not only that, but we don’t have anyone running the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) because they need to be appointed by the head of HHS. Meanwhile, the Republicans continue their delays, placing politics ahead of the safety of the American people.

Second, Republicans made a huge show of stripping $900 million in funding for pandemic preparation from the economic stimulus bill, ridiculing the spending as pork that had nothing to do with economic recovery. Just a few weeks later, the world economy is taking a turn for the worse because of fears of a pandemic. The website of Republican Senator Susan Collins even brags about her removing the money for pandemic flu preparedness. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, “If swine flu morphs into a pandemic, it’s the last thing the world economy needs, as it’s already on its knees.”

Finally, and on a slightly humorous note, Governor Rick Perry of Texas, who made headlines recently because of his comments about Texas seceding from the union, formally requested help from the CDC to deal with the possible swine flu pandemic. I guess he needs the federal government after all. Of course, without a director at the CDC (because of the Republicans) who knows when they will be able to respond.

UPDATE: This might be unrelated, but I couldn’t resist. An Israeli official says that in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities to pig references, the “swine flu” should be renamed. His suggestion? “Mexican flu”, which might say more about the Israeli official’s attitude towards Mexicans than about his religion. So much for sensitivity. US scientists say that there is nothing “Mexican” about the swine flu (it was first identified in the US).
 
How do we prevent catching this? Usual flu military techniques? Masks required?
