This tool is geared at both scales of the skill level and is equally easy and powerful to use. We use it often to create quick banner ads but it is capable of full Flash animations.

Having been a SWiSH user since 2001, I discovered this software back when I was looking for an easy way to create Flash animations. Late last year however, the company that developed this software announced it latest and greatest version of this useful application: SWiSH Max2.

Unlike the software I used back in the day, SWiSH Max2 packs a lot more than merely flash animations. It should also be noted that even though this software competes with Flash CS3 Professional, the latter still offers the best solution for professional Flash developers.

This software retails at a fraction of the price of Adobe’s software, and has all the tools and functions most people require from a Flash authoring application.

Even though this software seems impressive on black and white, the real test is in the user experience, a department where so many other software developments fail horribly.

SWiSH Max2 is surprisingly easy to use and, thanks to its timeline based layout, the learning curve is not very steep. The user interface is easy to navigate and, should you get stuck, we found the help files and massive online community a huge help.

So what are some of the best features of SWiSH Max2?

Well for one thing, it is one of the simplest way’s to make banner ads for websites with; moreover users are now able to easily customise flash based scripts, even if they have no programming knowledge. If, on the other hand, you are a programmer, SWiSH Max2 also is a full script editor.

The software features loads of components such as combo boxes, drop down boxes, and radio buttons which are easily integrated into your animation. Flash animators will really appreciate the effort that has been put into this application to make it one of the most user friendly drawing (and editing) environments we have seen to date.

One of the features we particularly loved was the Preloaded Speed Tester; this nifty little function will allow you to test your Flash files as it would be seen in various Internet connection speeds - this is particularly handy for South African developers.

Looking at the import and export capabilities within this software, we were again impressed by the vast support that SWiSH Max2 has on offer. You can not only import SWF (Flash) movies that were created in other applications, but you can also import almost any other media type to include in your Flash animation.

Once you have completed your animation you can then export it based on virtually any criteria you might have, including custom compression requirements.

SWiSH Max2 is the type of application every web developer should have in their toolbox, but it’s also a great place to start (and inevitably you will stick with it) if you want to get into Flash development.
