Is it a huge schlep to switch from one FTTH ISP to another, much like it is with ADSL (simply get another account and off your go)? The question is specific to most ISP's charging a "installation fee" for month-to-month customers which included a Router, etc, which I would not need.

Has anyone tried this and what was the experience like?

If you are on VUMA etc the switching you speak off is not possible.

Telkom FTTH you can have multiple ISP accounts, and you switch like adsl.

So does this mean you are effectively stuck with whoever you sign up with off the bat, unless you cancel and re-sign up with another?

Cancel at the end of the month. Move to another ISP. A bit of a shcelp but yeah...

Downtime? Also, what is the policy on the "installation fee" when you already have all the kit and it is just a case of capturing the new credentials on your router, and them updating the speed profile?

That isn't an installation so there should be no fee.

You already have the fiber.

Downtime should be as long as it takes to change PPPoE accounts.

To move ISP you will have to pay the activation fee(999 or whatever it is), not the install fee again. Apart from new pppoe details the network has to change your lines vlan to the new ISP's network's one.

I assume this is only if you are moving the line hosting? I can change data accounts on my fibre line no problem, just like DSL.

Openserve yes, the rest you won't be able to change accounts without them re configuring the line.

With vumatel, the process is a little different, you have an account at shop.vumatel.co.za and from there you select the package you want to move to and select 'activate package'. But I think you need to do this after giving your current ISP notice etc. to avoid additional charges.

I've switched on Vuma. You go to the portal and cancel your account, schedule it for month end. You then sign up your new ISP and schedule it for month start. Was a seamless experience.

Nothing on the portal stops you from cancelling your account, so be sure to reach out to your existing ISP to clarify your cancellation so you don't get billed incorrectly (or, correctly, and you didn't realise there would be a final invoice).
