My mom asked me to post this one :p

Should she go to the doctor for her swollen ankles and feet? Or does it mean something as simple as not drinking enough water or it being summer to do with anything?

It's to the point where it's uncomfortable/starting to hurt a bit.

And its 5pm and not an emergency, if you guys say she should go I'll tell her, else, any advice would be great.

Maybe soak it in cold water?

Huh bud . . . Swollen feet in a elderly person should not be taken lightly ! While more then one thing can cause feet/ankles to swell, especially late in the afternoon, one should seek proper medical advice. Is not necessarly a emergency. One of the causes can be a problematic heard! Especially if your mom is over 50 and sedentary!

Same thing happens to my sister, do you think it's hereditary? My sister has had 3 kids though, so I was like "maybe its that" and never gave it a second thought... now with my mom complaining I'm figuring "WTF"?

What would the doc normally look for? Does it comprise of blood tests? Just trying to get a handle on it because my mom and dad only has a hospital plan, no medical aid

+1. Go to the doc and don't delay. If it's something stupid then fine, but it may be something more severe like pedal edema which could be indicative of anything from heart to kidney failure. Rather have it checked out properly.

How long has it been present..? When was the last time your mom went to the doc to have her BP, HR etc checked...?

EDIT: Best person to ask here would be PeterCH.

The only medical advice you should ever accept on a forum is "Go see a Doctor!".

Depending on your doc it will be about R250 for the consultation and then add the meds.

Last year I sent my sons nanny to my personal Doctor as she had some health issues. Turned out that if I did not do that she most likely would not be alive today. It cost me R700 but it made a difference.

indeed - take her to doc
as been said, anything from liver to heart issues - don't ignore

It is probably about water retention. Most likely she will take something for that (Puresis). But it repletes Potassium, so you need another tablet for that. If she's in bed then it's less of an issue.

It sounds like a pretty serious problem. I would rather send her to the doctor to find out what's wrong instead of her having to amputate her legs or feet :O

+ 1000 000. I second that. Don't take chances or risks with one's health!

This isn't a medical forum and a diagnosis cannot be made on a forum! A diagnosis requires a full proper history and physical examination (as a minimum requirement).

I went through a patch of inexplicably swollen ankles and put a big bolster under the matress at the foot of the bed. No problems since. Not once. Maybe she could try that ?

sounds like gout to me, it usually starts at your toe/angles where you have the least bloody in your body, check it out at a doctor though.

It's not serious don't worry. My mom has the same thing sometimes.

What horrible advice. You do realize there are similar signs and symptoms for many different "ailments", some not serious and some life threatening. Just because you have seen this once before does not mean that ALL cases are the same:rolleyes:

Yeah course it does. I know everything.

Adequate proof that you should take all medical advice given on a forum with a pinch of salt.

Lol...something like that :D

i dont think anyone here is a medical professional. i would say she goes to the doc and get the real deal in terms of advice and meds.

PeterCH...as I said before. But like you say the only way is for her to go see a Dr. so she can be properly asessed.

True, but your posts carry the obligatory "additional cup of salt" as opposed to just a pinch :p

@ Acidrazor....any feedback...?
