Hi all,
I am new here, and actually new to South Africa as well.

I have been reading your forum for a few days, and actually I found it is by far the best place where to find information about ADSL and broadband in South Africa.

Now, reading your posts I understood that Telkom is not the best ISP here and, guess what, the house I am renting is already equipped with Telkom phone and ADSL.

I still didn't receive the exact details from the landlord, but it should be something like DoPremium bundle (with 20 gb per month and 4/10 mbps speed) which costs more than R 700 per month, including the Telkom line rental.

Actually I couldn't care less of having a fixed line for phone calls, and I just need one to connect to the internet.

Going through your forum and looking at the offers in their websites, I would like to switch to Afrihost or Axxess, but I don't know what I have to do terminate Telkom contract and which options would save more Telkom fixed costs.

Moreover, I am afraid that in the process I may found myself disconnected from both Telkom ADSL and the new one for a lot of time.

Any advice would be more than welcome here!

Please consider that I am not such a heavy user, but I still use a lot of Youtube (for my child) and I don't mind downloading 20/30 movies (not HD or blue ray) per month.

Thank you and happy to have joined your community.

Giuseppe

You will need your Telkom DSL line and normal analogue line. You can cancel your data portion of your account (i.e. 20GB Telkom bundle). Do this by phoning Telkom (10210) or by visiting a Telkom store. You will also need a new account from your new service provider. They will give you a username and password which you will need to enter on your router. If you need help here, your new service provider could help you with that. Note that the account will need to be in your name to alter anything to the account.

It seems like you will need an uncapped account from your new service provider.
Afrihost bundle: http://www.afrihost.com/site/product/uncapped_adsl_bundles?src=website_nav
Telkom bundle: http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/internet-bundles/ - I don't think there is anything wrong with Telkom Internet
OpenWeb (My personal service provider - have found them to have great products) http://openweb.co.za/

Your usage will be in the region of 60 - 100GB per month, so I would probably consider a 4Mb uncapped account as a starting point. Once you settle in you can adjust if necessary - all it takes is a 'phone call to your ISP.

I also wouldn't argue with f.mgr list of recommended ISPs.

Hmm, I actually find Telkom the best out of the bunch and I've tried a few ISPs via their uncapped trial offerings. Telkom works 24/7 where i've found the others throttle or shape you during business hours.

Bottom line you will still require a voice line + adsl line from Telkom. With your usage requirements I would also suggest you sign up for a uncapped package. If it was me I would sign up for the Telkom Uncapped bundled service which works out cheaper than any of the other ISPs and the service is better. I'm back with Telkom ISP after using several other providers for a few years and overall I find the experience much better than that provided by others.

Thank you all for your advices.

Actually, I was afraid that Telkom service wasn't good enough after reading some posts and especially after reading the survey published here in mybroadband.

Regarding the costs, it seemed to me that for instance Afrihost had better prices for capped 50gb than Telkom for capped 20gb.

Is there anything I am missing in comparing these cost?

Ummmmm telkom shapes you 24/7 once you take the piss and use more than 1/3 of the theoretical maximum data for the month.

That only happens when you pass a certain usage threshold which on a 1Mb/s line seems to be at about the 120GB mark or so. Before that it runs 24/7 flat out unlike other ISPs I've tried with downright shoddy performance during the day for the entire month. The Telkom way of doing things works much better, your browsing still works fine, youtube buffers fine with a browser plugin, it's just the download speed that is affected and at 45kB/s it's just under 1/2 speed which is fine should you reach that throtttling line before the end of the month. I still reckon this is the best value for money uncapped package out there.

in that case I agree. My downloads (when not throttled) RARELY went below 90kB/s. 99% (and that means 99% of 24/7) of the time it ran at about 95ish kB/s

I just had a look an after I got throttled I've already used another 30GB even though I've almost completely stopped downloading, at 45kB/s I suspect you can still pull down a decent amount of GB at the lower speed if you wanna carry on downloading.

I did initially have a little hissy fit when I got throttled but after thinking about it and comparing to other options out there I decided I'm happy here.

agreed again LOL. got throttled at about 115GB. Currently on +-145GB and pulling about 3-4GB per day while throttled. :D

...this is exactly what i'm going to do starting Sept...i'm going for the "adsl uncapped premium 4mb"...R200 cheaper than most isp's...
