The Australian city of Sydney has experienced its hottest weather in 79 years with temperatures in the region hitting as high as 47.3C.

Heatwave update: world No.11 Kristina Mladenovic retired midway through her @SydneyTennis match due to heat stress. 3 courtside photographers' cameras shut down, takes 55 degree temps to do that. Outside temp recorded earlier was 44.5

Amateurs , it often get's to 48/49 in the Orange River Valley west of the Augrabies, added to this, 46 is not uncommon in the Green Kalahari, Upington......

Sydney has a population of 5 million, Upington has less than 2% of that. One has the ocean, the other has the river...

So proportionally , a wee river for so little folk and a big ocean for so many.... :crylaugh:

Humidity has a large effect on the perceived discomfort of a given temperature. I have no idea what the humidity was when the temperature was 47C, but I'm pretty sure it was dry desert air (like our berg winds).

SA has a mix of sub-climates, drier in the west, more humid in the south-east. Durban is unbearable in summer due to the humidity, even if the temperature is below 35C.

^, the 5th test of the Ashes is on in Sydney at the moment...they were showing the temps and humidity. Over 40 degrees in the shade with ~20% humidity.

If the humidity had been higher, they should have been considering calling the players off...don't think I've ever seen that happen before.
