Symantec faces extortion attempt

I heard from Yama ;) that they wanted to pay for it not to be released and not them demanding money or "else" (releasing it). Typical from a company to pwned, to change the story and not look embarrassed .

Now hackers have demanded $50,000 (R378,026) to keep the source code from appearing online.

They did not demand jack, they where offered $50K to keep it secret.

Big difference.

After the first three months you have to convince us you have destroyed the code before we pay the balance.

How could they possibly convince Symantec that the source code has been destroyed?

It would all have to be done in "good faith". Or "bad faith", whatever "floats-your-boat". :D

Negotiations have since broken down, and the source code has apparently made it onto popular torrent websites under the name “Symantec’s pcAnywhere Leaked Source Code”.

Who bailed? The hackers or Symantec?

Something tells me the hackers, as they didnt do it for the money in the 1st place.

Hacker currency = street cred, worth way more than $50K. If they wanted money they could have sold that code easily for way more than that.

Ok guess I was wrong.

Oh and Symantec now came out that Sam Thomas was a law enforcement agent.

the real "truth" will never be known
