Since friday I haven't been able to connect to the Symantec server to do my Norton updates. It keeps saying Unable to Connect to Server once I have seleced the updates I would like to be downloaded. Is anyone else having this problem?

NB: IF YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE A STUPID POST TELLING ME TO USE ANOTHER PROGRAM YOU FIND SUITS YOU - DON'T.

I could swear there was a thread about this which i just replied to a minute ago but now itsgone? anyway, having the same problem and also with the m$ update page, any suggestions would be great

SuperAntMD I had erros on the MS update page, not problems tho. It was telling me my updates of 1.7MB would take 1 hour 7 mins to download, then only took about ten mins so that was odd. WiseCrack - I'm on 56k (ONLY FOR ANOTHER WEEK OR SO - ADSL GETTING INSTALLED IN THE NEXT WEEK HOPEFULLY :D:D:D) so currently I'm uncapped.

um....bugger

seriously, who is your isp? secondly whats a trace route look like on your machine to symantec? thirdly spyware clean recently (found some spyware and viruses can cause this)? anotherly check the hosts file has not been buggered? lastly use a better product :P

DFantom... die ;) *G* Nah I think it was just something to do with TelkomSA, but it's working now. Was weird though cause my moms Tiscali connection was downloading them perfectly if I connected with it... odd O_o

Hmm, Tiscali is Mweb, which was UUNet and now IS (not sure if the infrastructure is going via IS yet). So it is likely that they routed differently and bypassed the issue.

I see.. hmm... ah well all seems to be working fine on both connections now... *shrug*

I've had the exact same problem with NIS 2003 and Windows updates, Was aking about it on another thread on the forums. I still can not connect to Norton with Telkom, It just times out. Same with windows. Log into Nukecap though and it loads instantly?

I've sent 4 emails off to telkom support and I have not got a single reply back yet :(

certain viruses prevent you from connecting to windows update and the various virus definition update servers.

Open the following file in notepad and make sure there isnt anything at the bottom of the file.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ open the hosts file

Very few people will have anything after: 127.0.0.1 localhost

If you see a scroll bar on the right hand side of notepad, scroll down. The viruses normally insert around 10 - 30 blank lines so you dont notice the additions

Actually symantec av users with email scanning normally do have a line under that for the av to handle scanning. Removing that line may break the email scanning.

None of my clients norton av installations have had a line below the localhost

Checked my hosts file.. Nothing out of the normal, Ran adware, Spybot S&D, Hijackthis, etc. My PC is fine. Though I can still not update Norton while using a Telkom account on my ADSL.

As I've said though, I log into Nukecap and its updated in a few secs

Having the same problems.
Retrieving the update lists takes forever. The actual downloads are quick as ever.
Any suggestions??

There are specific ports required that need to be opened for the live update to work right? Now I've done what Symantec says on their website with regards to enabling them on my firewall, and since Its only the Telkom ISP that causes it and not other ADSL ISP's? Could Telkom be shaping the ports used by Symantec incorrectly?

I'm sure saix has done something sinister to symantec / m$ updates. Tried it through diginet, dialup, sentech and iBurst. Only adsl seems to be affected. Although the problem seems intermitent, just manaully d/lling the updates for now.

hmm not only adsl...we on isdn and tried running live update tonite ... it took fifteen minutes, (6.6MB) got right to the end and a window said download failed due to an internal fault and to try again later? thats a first for us :(
