Has anyone experienced this before. My Router boots up and the sync light flashes and then goes steady green like the normal connection. When you then try and browse nothing.

Logging onto the router indicates no ip address from ADSL network. Further investigation of the Router status reveals Negotiation: LCP initialize.

Does this mean that the modem and the DSLAM cannot establish a Sync?

Any help recommendation?

Any one else ever experience this?

Phoned Telkom and they are saying that they think it is a router problem, but they would gladly charge me R 400 just to make sure.

Mean_Monster,

I've had exactly the same problem before. It is NOT your ADSL router. The problem is with the DSLAM port you are connected to. In my case - as well as Slip's (another member of the forum) - we also couldn't get an IP address allocated due to PPP authentication failure at the DSLAM.

Log a fault with Telkom and explain to them you can connect, the light syncs, but PPP authentication doesn't happen. Try borrow someone's account and confirm that the problem does not go away (so you can prove to Telkom it's not because your account has been suspended).

What they normally do is swap your DSLAM port or something. Not your problem - it's not at your end.

just make sure you uname/pwd is correct too else you gonna take a hit when they comeout there.

Thanks Titanium for your reply.

I have a couple of username and passwords with different ISP's so I can confirm it not to be a username password problem. I also thought initial that the ISP's Radius setup was stuffed or either the DHCP is not assigning IP's. But I left home after that and didn't bother as if it was one of the above they would have to fix it as it affects everybody. ISP said no problem on their network. Phoned first techie at Telkom and he said he can see on my line that the modem is synching. Then this morning phone again and this techie said they couldn't get a line sync when the did the test thru the evening. I also doubt it to be the router as it was off for 2 days and now when I tried to connect, this problem.

The biggest problem I have with Telkom is that they get the same sort of problem often, but you always have to re invent the wheel with them when trying to resolve a problem. At the office we had problem with ISDN lines that would lock up and stay engaged, everytime you would speak to a different person and reffering them back to the previous ref also didn't help as they never logged what they did to fix the problem. According to them it "magically fixed itself" I suppose that is one way to say it wasn't is thanks for the call out charge. Very, very hard to prove.

Resolved

Just an update for any other potential user suffering with this problem.

It was indeed a Telkom issue and they put me on another port in the DSLAM.

Now I wonder if I can bill them for a days Internet Access seeing they wanted to bill me for a call out charge
