I am having huge problems with my line at home. This has now been going on for a couple weeks now, and Telkom technicians have been out twice to try sort it out.

My line keeps loosing sync at random times, sometimes it takes a while to connect, other times it is quick to connect. I am getting sessions ranging anything from a couple of minutes to a couple hours in length - sometimes up to 15 - 20 sessions in a 24 hour period (monitored by SASA)
What seems to be happening though, is that if the line isn't sync'ing, then the line quality is bad on the telephone, and when it is connected OK, then the call quality is good.

The first technician said there was a fault on the line, and disconnected everything except the ADSL (filters, telephone, etc.), as asked me to monitor it for the weekend. It was still exactly the same, so I logged a call the next week. The second technician came round, but said the line is fine, and it must be my modem

I have just called and logged another fault, and errors were detected in their test. So now we will see what the techie has to say this time.

Can anyone offer any suggestions of things to check with the techie? Is it possible that the problem can be with my modem? Intermittent problems are always a b!tch to solve.

Tell them to check the exchange box.
New installations can "alter" your line.

Have logs ready to show the technician.

All I can say is good luck

My line developed an intermittent fault in February- one wire out of the pair was intermittently disconnecting, causing the voice line to go dead but the ADSL still worked, albeit at reduced speed. Also a lot of crackling on the line.

The techs would come out 4 days after the fault was logged, screw around a bit and close the fault. Next day it would drop again so I would log a new fault and wait 4 days. Eventually they had replaced every piece of copper from the exchange to the wall jack- some twice, and also replaced the DSLAMs in the exchange. They finally solved it----2 weeks ago.

OK, now I am furious
Got an SMS yesterday afternoon to say the fault has been resolved, and ticket closed, without so much as a call... never came round to my place to test.

Someone is gonna be blasted soon...

They never go to your house dude, they go around to the exchange your stuff has been installed on

try this...take the reciever off the hook and leave it off. The ring tone will become an engaged tone and then the exchange will terminate the voice side of the line. See if the sync is better this way.

I had a sync problem a while back and the techies check everything and eventually suggested that the complete cable run be replaced....?

While they were screwing around in the exchange to try different pairs of copper they had to disconnect the exchange connection where the DSLAM connection and POTS line split. When they reconnected the line in the echange the modem synced first time and has been working since. I assumed a bad connection in the exchange at the voice/digital split.

What I suggest, by keeping the handset "open", is to keep some voltage on the voice line to keep the possible bad connection somewhere from causing sync losses. I also had plenty of audible noise on the line.

Hope this make sense...
