Sync Speed & Line Speed on 4MB Line

Now I want to get some clarity...

I had my line upgraded from 512k to 4MB service. Thx Telkom, took them about two days.

I make a habit of it to check the down/up speed in the web interface by logging onto the default gateway every night.



According to Telkom Supprt my line is sync-ing at 4MB, but since upgraded my actual line speed varies from 1600 - 4096kbps as shown in the web interface. On avarage I am sitting on about 1800-2200kbps. Which I do not have a problem with in general as Telkom ADSL is a Best-Effort-Service and, after all, it is called the "1-4MB Service"

Can someone please explain to me Sync Vs Line Speed?

The sync speed is in essence your lines synchronization at the exchange, you could theoretically say the sync speed is your line speed.

Your line should NEVER fluctuate it's sync speed, it should be a "constant" value that only decreases or increases if and when you do a speed upgrade or downgrade.

Try switching your router/modem off for about 15 minutes. Make sure you have filter's on all telephone's and fax machines.

Test it and see if you sync at 4096/512 (4mbps). If you don't, switch the router off again, but this time, physically disconnect the phones and faxes from the telephone jack, so only the ADSL is connected. See if your sync speed is stable.

Doing this, you will narrow down if it's in fact a line problem (too far from the exchange, bad cabling) or whether it could be as easy as replacing the filters or telephone/fax.
