Hi, what is the best way to synchronize (say) excel files between two or more computers that do not have a network server? Am sceptic of using the cloud, but have seen programs like Windows Homegroup and even BitTorent Sync - anyone used it and your opinion?

Just use Google Drive. Map it on both PC's. You can't get more secure than that

Am sceptic of using the cloud...

For what reason?

I use Dropbox for the stuff I need synced. Nothing here is very confidential so I'm not too concerned about privacy. If you concerned about privacy check out SpiderOak.

I am using bittorrent sync. Also wanted something that is not in the cloud. Works well to sync my complete photo library between two pc's on my internal network.

Well you could have used WMP library sharing then :)

Can you create two copies instead of just sharing? The goal was to create two copies - laptop & homeserver.

The rest of the family access through sharing through the network.

I'm not sure. I only found this out yesterday by the way. I was struggling to share a folder with a few movies on my laptop with the PC, but forgot the PC's admin account password, coincidentally I went to WMP because I though screw it, I'm goign to watch this movie on the laptop now, when I noticed the share library option. Once I clicked that, the entire library was visible on the PC :)

Maybe your router has a usb port, using ftp you could share the file locally between PC's.

Use Sync (Bittorent sync) Macbook feeds - Android Tablet and Dell laptop

It is a combination of privacy and the chance of files becoming corrupted. It is for someone wanting to share a excel worksheet with lots of info.

Why would files become corrupt though? And why would this affect cloud services only?

Bittorrent Sync went and made a stupid paid model. Seems the next best alternative (and probably likely to become much better now) is SyncThing: https://syncthing.net/
